Clava Cairns
Our first stop we find The Clava Cairns—or the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Balnuaran of Clava—are all that remains of what was once a much larger Bronze Age burial complex. Dating back 4,000 years, the evocative cemetery site retains original features, including passage graves, standing stones, and ring cairns (stone circles).
Culloden Battlefield
Our second stop take us to Culloden moor Marking the spot of the last major battle on British soil, the wild moor at Culloden is the resting place of 1,500 Jacobite and 50 Government soldiers who fought and died here in 1746. Today, you can walk along the battle lines and see the graves of the soldiers beside the memorial cairn in the Centre of the battlefield. Flags represent the front lines of both armies and show the vast scale of the battle, whilst in the centre clan markers indicate the graves of the fallen. As part of our continued conservation of the site, we work hard to try and restore the land, as closely as possible, to how it would have looked in the 18th century. Working alongside our Facilities team, we have goats and Shetland cows who graze the land just as they would have years ago. The unique landscape of Culloden is also home to a rich variety of wildlife, including skylarks (who both live and breed on the battlefield) and garden tiger moth caterpillars

Excellent and knowledgeable local guide, fun and informative small group tour. Ritchie is terrific and lives in the Highlands so you get a real perspective about this beautiful, magical place. Definitely recommend.

Our husbands weren’t feeling weak so it was just my friend and I on the tour. We recruited some new friends to join us and we all toured with Richy. He was wonderful. We got to pick where we wanted to go with his suggestions. We had a delightful time. The tour and Lunch at Cawdor was wonderful. The back roads were beautiful.! We had a wonderful day. ❤️

Richie is a wonderful tour guide. We saw many places that tour buses can’t get to because of narrow roads. He asked what was on our bucket list, and then built a tour around it. It was a great day.

A great day and a great tour! Went to every place on the list plus a bunch of places the guide squeezed in! Felt like we got lucky with this tour and, after days of cruise ship-booked tours, had the best tour of them all! Small size of the group even made it better and more individualized. Glad we went with the GREAT guide and independent operator rather than the cruise company.

What a fabulous day with Ritchie! He was the perfect guide. Eight of us traveled fairly comfortably in his mini van. Do be aware if there are large people in your party, probably should only be 6. We visited the Clava Cairns and stones where Clare went through the stone in Outlander. Very different from Stonehenge which we saw a couple of weeks ago. Then on to the Culloden battlefield which was extremely moving as Ritchie related the history. Lovely visitors center there. Urguhart castle was magnificent to behold. A short film sets the scene for the castle. We had a delicious lunch in cafe along the way and got to view Highland cows up close and personal. So cute! Gin tasting at Great Glen was the perfect finale to our tour. Big thanks to Ritchie whose history in the area made everything so much more interesting.
