Discover the rich history of Travnik, which became the capital of the Ottoman province of Bosnia and the residence of the Bosnian viziers in 1699. The city became an important center of government in the whole Western frontier of the empire, and consulates were established by the governments of France and Austria-Hungary. After Travnik we're heading to one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jajce. Beautiful waterfall combined with complex history make it stand out among others. "Dear friend, I'm writing to you from the town where in the very centre of it the most beautiful waterfall in the whole empire is located" - (it was written on a postcard sent from Jajce to Prag by Czech tourists, in the late 19th century, when Bosnia was part of Austro-Hungarian empire). Last but not least, you will visit watermills that are beautiful and straight out of fairy tale.

Fortress of Jajce
The next stop is medieval city of Jajce, often known as King city. It is one of the best-preserved fortified capitals of the Bosnian Kingdom, the last stronghold before to kingdom dissolved under the pressure of military advancement at the onset of Ottoman Empire takeover.
Catacomb of Jajce
Catacombs of Jajce is the name given by locals to underground Christian small church so it is not a "catacomb" in true sense. Church has been carved in a single rock or a cave in late Romanesque style.

This was a great day of activities. Kenan is very knowledgeable about his country and its history. He knows all of the best stops for lunch, coffee, and to try some of the Travnik cheese! The views across Jajce from the fort are spectacular.

We had a brilliant time exploring Bosnia with Kenan, he was helpful and very knowledgeable, plus his varied music taste was an added bonus for the drives! The watermills and forts are beautiful with a very interesting history, well worth the trip. Don’t forget to try the Travnik cheese!

A fantastic day out from Sarajevo, beautiful Bosnian towns, medieval castles with the glorious mountains as a constant backdrop. Kenan was a fantastic guide, and to top off the day, took up to a local supermarket and we had a little picnic overlooking Pliva lake, a truly memorable experience.

What a day! Ben, our guide, was great. He took us to Jajce and then to Travnik. He gave us lots of historical insights, and we also had some really good conversations. I’ll add that he’s a great driver—we had to take a village road to avoid traffic, and we almost got stuck on a path because of the river, but Ben managed to get us out of there without any trouble. As a bonus, he played some great Bosnian music for us on the way. A fantastic experience—enriching, fun, and friendly all at once. I highly recommend this tour! A big thank you to him :)

This was a beautiful and engaging day trip that combined stunning scenery with a broader understanding of Bosnia’s long and layered history. The stops in Travnik and Jajce offered a wonderful mix of old fortresses, historic towns, and incredible natural landscapes. The views were a major highlight—especially the waterfalls and elevated viewpoints—which made the day feel both visually impressive and culturally enriching. Rather than focusing on a single period, the tour helped place Bosnia’s history in a wider context, spanning centuries and giving a fuller sense of how the country’s past fits together. Our guide, Senad, was outstanding. He was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and very friendly, and his explanations were clear and engaging throughout the day. He also brought a great sense of warmth to the tour, occasionally adding light humor that made the experience feel relaxed and welcoming without taking away from the substance. One small note for travelers: if you’re visiting in winter, some of the smaller, tourist-oriented towns and shops may be fairly quiet or closed for the season. This didn’t take away from the experience for me, but it’s helpful to know when planning. This was a memorable and well-rounded tour, and a great way to experience both the beauty and the depth of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
