We made a special stop in Toyama to participate in this incredible workshop. Our hostess welcomed us into her home and shared fascinating insights into the town’s history and the intricate process of indigo dyeing. She also assisted us in designing my scarf and my husband’s handkerchief. We thoroughly enjoyed brainstorming and executing our designs, and we’re thrilled that we were able to bring our vision to life with her invaluable support. It was truly an awe-inspiring experience to immerse ourselves in this traditional craft. We highly recommend this workshop to anyone traveling in the area, and it’s even worth making a special trip for.

The teacher explained in details the process of making indigo and gave us a pamphlet with pictures. She was very friendly and helped the group to make the idigo handkerchiefs. We used marbles and net to design our indigo patterns. It was an interesting and fun hands-on experience.

Ayumi-san is warm and welcoming and you can tell how much she loves and respects her craft. She carefully explains to you the whole process of indigo dying and takes care answering any questions. I had no idea how labor intensive it is but it takes a lot of work to make indigo dye! It was really fun dipping our handkerchiefs into the dye and then finally untying and washing to reveal the end result. Beautiful! A special souvenir of a wonderful morning spent in a quiet mountain town.

The experience was very interesting where our sensei (or teacher) Ms Ayumi explained the process of Aizome or indigo dyeing and it’s was very informative and memorable experience. We got to keep our indigo dyed handkerchief.
