Ananuri fortress: a story in stone On the coast of Aragvi you will be met by the only fortress of Georgia that has reached us in its original form. Walking through the territory of the Ananuri defense complex, you will feel like a resident of the Middle Ages and learn about the glorious past of the Aragva eristavi (heads of the people). And we will definitely pay attention to the Assumption Church of the 17th century, whose facade is decorated with interesting bas-reliefs, and each element of the decor carries a hidden meaning.

This got off to a pretty slow start but over time it got pretty good despite a sketchy day of randomly wild weather heading up to the Caucasus on the border w/the Evil Empire. First stop overlooked what I recall was a massive reservoir/lake for a break at a spot where, of course, locals were selling touristy trinkets, etc. Too much time here-should have been a short pit stop. Then we stopped to imbibe some local fire water samples in the middle of nowhere-that heated me up on a day where there were dramatic temperature changes heading up the mountain. Eventually we made it to the Kazbegi area & the views were stunning-highlight of the trip. We also stopped at a required monastery & also a huge concrete monument. And finally, FINALLY, we got to restaurant "lunch" at 4 pm! Unacceptable-most folks on the bus were pretty hungry. So a bit hit & miss. But our guide, Nick, was pretty funny & his English was top-notch. Dude looked like a surfer slacker from California-he was wearing sweatpants which seems pretty out of character for any "professional" guide which I agree with but the dude made it work. And kudos to the driver...the quality of the roads was generally good but dang, he has to do about 1000 sharp turns every day.

Katia was a great host / tour guide ! Great trip - Katia has a lot of great knowledge about Georgia and the area. For the trip - be prepared for slightly treacherous mountain ridge journey with optional seatbelts. Not a bad idea to bring snacks for the evening as we got back in around 21 after a 12/13 lunch. Wear appropriate clothing (or bring a jumper can also get a bit cold)

Very nice tour. Keti, our guide, loves Georgia and transmitted all her passion showing how hospitable the country is. She did everything to put us at ease, and showed a lot of knowledge about Georgian history. We had 12 hours with a great group, and we got along well together. Special thanks to the tour operator, that let me join the trip the day after because I was not feeling good the morning I had booked. I recommend to anyone interested in culture, landscapes and enjoying a good time.

Disappointing Experience with Ushba Tours – Not Recommended I recently took a day tour with Ushba Tours, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience from start to finish. There was no prior communication about what essentials we needed to carry, which left many of us unprepared for the conditions during the tour. The pickup was delayed, and when the bus finally arrived, the seats were uncomfortable and the air conditioning barely worked, making the journey quite unpleasant. Our guide gave only a brief overview of the sites while we were on the bus and mentioned there would be a lot of crowds due to a local festival — something we should have been informed of in advance. Once we arrived at the destinations, the guide did not accompany us, provided no further explanation or context, and later on fell sick, apparently due to the altitude difference. To make matters worse, Gudauri Ski Resort, which was supposed to be one of the key highlights of the tour, was completely skipped without any clear reason. The lunch stop was another negative — the restaurant staff were rude, and the overall experience there was chaotic and unwelcoming. This tour did not meet expectations at all, and I cannot recommend Ushba Tours based on this experience. On the other hand, I’ve had a great experience with Gamarjoba Tours, and I’d recommend them instead for a well-organized and enjoyable trip.
