The khukuri is the symbol of loyalty and Gurkha warrior, regarded as traditional to all hill tribes of Nepal, also a multipurpose knife can be used for shaping timber to chopping up meat and vegetables. The blade is of tempered steel, slightly curved and exceedingly sharp. The handle is usually of wood or buffalo horn. A nick in the blade close to the handle serves the purpose of preventing blood from reaching the handle and is also symbolic of the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The blade is enclosed in a scabbard of wood and leather.
The Khukuri comes in different sizes but for this workshop you will be making a small(6 inch) blade. Take part in creating your own knife. The process implies cutting/hammering a raw piece of iron into the shape of the blade, grinding the blade and making the handle. (note that for safety reasons, the blade grinding will only be done by the host and we advise guests to stay clear of the sparks during this process). Take a Knife as a souviner.

Great session - along with lunch of delicious Momos - and learnt from a 40+ year veteran on how to make my own Gurkha (Khukuri) knife.

A good local experience. We made a knife out of old bus suspension metal and a wooden handle. They let you participate when it is relatively safe too. Easy pick up and drop off.

Unbelievable experience. From tour company, to master knife-maker and assistants, to even his family, it was AMAZING!! Very intimate setting. Very hands on. Very participatory. Very educational. If you want a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience, not to mention your own Gurkha Khukuri knife to take home with you that you helped make, this is the workshop for you. Five stars across the board!!

This activity was fantastic the Craftsman and his family did a great job teaching how to make the knife. They also provided the history of the knife and the why behind the features.

A brilliant tour that I recommend to any one interested in seeing how these beautiful hand made knives are forged from raw materials. The tour included hotel pickup and drop-off with light refreshments. We attended the home of the Master craftsman who has been making knives for over 40 years. From raw high tensile steel we were shown how to heat, cut and hammer the steel into shape followed by grinding, polishing, engraving to completing the knife that was yours to keep. A hands on experience that allowed you to participate in some of the processes was in itself a unique experience. Our tour guide was extremely informative and spoke excellent english adding to the enjoyment of the tour. HIGHLY recommended.

One of the best things I did in Nepal. An amazing way to get a souvenir that will last a life time. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, we were involved in all the steps of the knife making and the blacksmiths were great. It was a pleasure to see their expertise and experience.

This workshop, no kidding, was one of the best things I have done while visiting Kathmandu! The guide and the craftsman were extremely friendly and skilled. We were allowed to participate in most stages of making the knife—enough so that I really felt that I helped make the knife. The finished product was sharp enough to shave with and they proved it by using it on my arm! Honestly, if you have a half day to spare you will never regret it and you’ll have a beautiful and useful knife for the rest of your life; an heirloom !

This was a really fun and unique day — getting to see the knife-making process from start to finish. The team walked us through each step and even let us take part in every phase, from shaping and polishing to the final touches. The chance to customize an inscription made it even more personal and meaningful. It was great to see the family-run forge in action, full of craftsmanship and pride in their work. I’d highly recommend this as a hands-on, memorable afternoon experience in Kathmandu.

It was a very exciting afternoon. Messerschmid has many years of experience in the manufacture of knives, his son also learns the trade and supported us. Very impressive to see how such an ancient tradition lives on. Definitely worth experiencing and a nice souvenir for home.

This workshop was a special experience. I would book it again anytime. It all worked out tip top. Pick up at the hotel, drive to the forge or the instructor at home, the work, explanations and the "hand-laying" as well as the return transport to the hotel. What makes me most happy is that I was able to take home a beautiful "own" knife as a souvenir from that day. (transport and import into CH without any problems). So I/we will remember this day for a long time.
