Mt. Rokko
Mount Rokko (六甲山, Rokkōsan, 931 meters) is the highest peak in the Rokko mountain range, which provides the pleasant green backdrop to the city of Kobe. Panoramic views of the heavily urbanized Hanshin region (Kobe and Osaka) can be enjoyed from the mountain and are particularly spectacular around sunset.
Shin-Kobe Trail
Shin-Kobe Ropeway (新神戸ロープウェー) is one of three services that lifts tourists up the southern slopes of the Rokko mountain chain. The ropeway departs from next to Shin-Kobe Station, Kobe's shinkansen station. As it ascends, it passes by the Nunobiki Waterfall and the Nunobiki Herb Garden, giving a nice aerial view of both. The highlight of the ride lies in the observation deck located just beside the top station, which offers spectacular views of Kobe and is a popular night view spot.

Our delightful guide, Norio, was knowledgeable and a master at train negotiation! A highlight of the tour was the Herb Garden and Ropeway visit. The Sake Brewery and Museum was interesting with fabulous explanation from Norio combined with outstanding exhibits and tastings! He then left us to wander at our leisure in Chinatown.

We were met by Harumi Sagayama, our guide, at the Shinkansen station. We immediately bonded over a shared love of Sumo, in particular as her favourite and ours are brothers! She went over the itinerary and adjusted the order of things to suit our preferences. Harumi was very knowledgeable, showing us the best order in which to view the Herb Gardens .. an hour seemed like a long time but we could have stayed there longer! We went on to view the earthquake memorial, go shopping, check out several museums and had a great tour of Kobe, with extensive explanations of the history of the city. We had many options for lunch but decided on an authentic Japanese experience .. the menu was hand-written in Japanese only and the food was delicious, although we would have been utterly lost without Harumi translating for us! When we went to pay for lunch we discovered a disaster-my wife had lost her wallet! Harumi was extremely helpful, taking us back to the last place she had used the wallet. The shop had no idea but Harumi took us to the security office and thankfully the lost was found! Given that the wallet had all of her ID, credit cards etc if we hadn't found it we would have been in considerable trouble but Harumi stayed with us past the official end-time of the tour to ensure that we retrieved the wallet and that we were all set for our return trip. She turned what would have been disaster around, and we are profoundly grateful! Not only a skilled and wise guide but a friendly, helpful and resourceful person! We would highly recommend her for anyone interested in learning about Kobe.

We arrived in Kobe on a cruise ship April 2026 Our guide Mr Yama had helped us plan a tour for the two of us prior to our arrival in Japan giving us several options. We had a most enjoyable and informative tour of the venues we had agreed on with him previously. He was waiting for us at the cruise port terminal as agreed and we first went to the Herb Garden via a cable car ride up the steep mountain side. The ride gave us a great view of Kobe and as it was fine we could even see Osaka. Our next stop was the European section of town which we walked down to from the Herb Garden . We enjoyed a coffee and cake at Starbucks to conclude our trip. Mr.Yama passed on to us his extensive knowledge of the history of sites visited and Kobe in general during the tour He also took photos of us during the tour to create memories for the future for us. His translation of written Japanese language inscriptions when required was appreciated. He was patient allowing us to set our own pace throughout the tour.

We enjoyed our time with Chiyuki as she toured us throughout Kobe. Showed as how to maneuver the trains and buses. She toured us through the beautiful Herb Gardens with a wonderful view of the city. Sake tasting in the Sake District and lunch and shopping back in China town. It was a perfect day with the perfect tour guide.

We booked this tour for the two of us and had a very interesting and enjoyable tour. Aki, our professional guide, sent us several options for our tour ahead of time and we selected the one that appealed to us. We went to the Herb Garden via a 10 minute gondola ride up the steep mountain side. The ride gave us a great view of Kobe and with the clear weather, we could even see Osaka. The Gardens were a mix of European style and Japanese but were as immaculate as a garden area could be, very well landscaped and maintained. We wander down the mountain with different herb gardens along just off the wide boulevards. Very impressive, even if you don't have a great interest in gardens and herbs. Our next stop was to the European section of town to walk through and see the older buildings that had survived the war. Other than the roof tiles, they were very familiar to us as they looked a lot like home. Still, very interesting to see the blend of styles. Walking through the neighbour led us to the Chinatown section, one of the three largest in Japan. We happened to be walking through the main street around lunch time and were stopped by some high school girls. Aki explained that they were on a scavenger hunt and had to bring back a photo with a foreign person and they wanted to know if they could get a picture with us. Unusual, to say the least, but we obliged and Aki took the photo for them. I hope they got a top score! Finally, she took us to the main shopping street nearby where the street was roofed over in frosted glass. Lots of different shops including a 100 Yen store/dollar store which was fun to poke around in. She took us to the spot where the free shuttle to the port terminal did the pickups which happened to be next to the Daimaru department store. She suggested going down to the basement floor to see the food that the locals routinely buy. We did and were surprised to see that it was much more than a grocery store. There were many sections with sweets and chocolates for sale as well as take way meals. The decor by itself was impressive, and the displays of chocolates etc were almost works of art. Yes, we bought some as gifts, they were too pretty not to. Final point to discuss was getting around. We used the local public transport, purchasing tickets with Aki's help. It is important to know that the only digital payment available seems to be prepaid metro cards, so cash is required. Aki let us know ahead of time what we would need to budget and it was more than enough. Admission to the Herb Garden was payable by credit card as well as purchases at the department store, but the shops in Chinatown and the shopping street were cash only. We had a very enjoyable tour and a great guide, Aki made sure we had brought what we needed for cash to get around and gave us a private tailored tour that we loved. Highly recommend this tour and especially Aki who made it a bespoke day out.

We had a wonderful day with Norio. Also in advance we had nice contact with Norio and the day was designed according to our ideas. In addition to the sights, we also learned a lot about getting around by public transport. Norio has always been attentive and has brought us closer to Kobe in many ways.
