The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is located on the eastern bank of the Rhine at Koblenz. It is the northernmost point of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine Valley”.
Situated 118 high above the Rhine it is accessible by cab cars from the town.

What To Expect
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
Built as a fortification process to guard the middle Rhine region, this fortress was constructed between 1817 and 1828. It is situated 118 meters high above the Rhine and is the second largest fortress in Europe. In 1672, while there was war between France and Germany, the Archbishop refused the request permits from both the sides for the troops to pass by the Rhine. Today, this fortress is open to the visitors and public and is connected to the town by cable car. The fortress is beautifully below by the british poet Lord Byron: “Here Ehrenbreitstein, with her shattered wall Black with the miner's blast, upon her height Yet shows of what she was, when shell and ball Rebounding idly on her strength did light; A tower of victory! from whence the flight Of baffled foes was watch'd along the plain: But Peace destroyed what War could never blight, And laid those proud roofs bare to Summer's rain-- On which the iron shower for years had poured in vain.” When the fortress was destroyed by the french troops in 1801, the poet wrote these words; which lead to the rebuilt of the fortress.

4.00We had a great time with Lisa and her guided tour. So glad we got there earlier so we could see the fortress on our own first. We took the cable car up to the fortress - well worth it!

5.00Highly recommend visiting the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and this tour in particular. We took the Seilbahn (cable car) from the Deutsches Eck up to the fortress, took a short walk to the entrance and met our guide there. We had an excellent local guide, with professional knowledge of history and very good english -- could not wish a better guide. The views of the city from above are another reason to visit.

5.00This was a great tour. Huge fortress, easy to get yourself lost. Highly recommend taking a guided tour. Much of the newer stuff is on both German and English while the older stuff is solely in German. The view from the cable cars over the Rhine are amazing as well.

5.00Ours was not an organised tour , however we were on a cruise on the Rhine and took the cable car which also included the cost of entrance for 16.90 euros pp . Breathtaking scenery from the cable car which ran from 1 pm . The fortress was beautiful and we had it to ourselves . Views from the top amazing . I suggest this time of year coming up late afternoon as you could see it in both lights and there was a special Christmas light event on .

3.00Nice if you take the cable car up to take a combi ticket you are not too much From the castle but it is definitely worth seeing you can also have lunch
