Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China.
Church of Saint Francis
St. Francis Church, in Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin), Kochi, originally built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 when he was on his third visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon.

Great tour with Safeer. His English is very good. He was very knowledgeable about the area and took us to some nice historical buildings. We also had a look around the harbour and the Chinese Fishing Nets, and visited some art galleries. He even recommended somewhere to go for lunch. Well worth booking.

The tour with Safeer was great! I was unfortunately the only one who booked the tour, but that was also my luck. It felt like I was walking with a friend. We talked very well about the city, life in India and the differences in our countries. It was really a lot of fun. And instead of the planned 2.5h we were on the road for 4h. Gladly again at any time!

We had a wonderful experience exploring Kochi with Arbus Name Guide. The tour was perfectly organized and a fantastic way to discover the city. Exploring Kochi by tuk-tuk made the experience even more fun and authentic. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about his city. He shared fascinating insights about the history, culture, and daily life of Kochi while taking us to places we would never have discovered on our own. We were traveling with our 5-year-old twins, and he was incredibly kind and patient with them, making the visit enjoyable for the whole family. Kochi is a beautiful city with so much character, and this tour allowed us to see it in a relaxed and genuine way. Highly recommended if you want to discover Kochi with a great local guide! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
