This is not a typical walk through Gion.
Instead of simply passing through Kyoto’s most famous district, this experience helps you understand what most visitors are actually looking at, but rarely notice.
Led by a local guide who has lived in Japan for over ten years, this walk is shaped by daily life, storytelling, and a genuine passion for Kyoto’s culture.
As we move through Gion at a relaxed pace, with time for photos and questions, you will gain a clear understanding of how the world of geisha truly functions, their arts, traditions, and the rules that shape their daily lives.
Rather than focusing on chasing geisha sightings, this experience gives you the context to understand the atmosphere, the behavior, and the meaning behind what you see around you.
Gion can be busy, but once you understand what you are looking at, the experience becomes completely different.
By the end of the walk, you will not just have seen Gion, you will understand it.

Gion Shirakawa
A peaceful ribbon of water flowing through the heart of Gion. Lined with willow trees, traditional tea houses, and stone lanterns, Shirakawa feels like a step back in time. This is one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric streets, quiet, elegant, and deeply connected to the world of geisha and old-town life.
Tatsumi Daimyojin Shrine
A small but powerful Shinto shrine hidden beside the canal. Dedicated to protection and good fortune, Tatsumi Shrine has long been prayed to by geisha and local residents. Its intimate size and quiet presence perfectly capture the spiritual side of everyday Kyoto.

I had an amazing experience with Michael! Even though I was the only participant on the tour, Michael still took the time to guide me through the entire experience with incredible patience, enthusiasm, and professionalism. He never made me feel rushed and was genuinely happy to share his knowledge. As someone who was curious about Kyoto’s history and the world of geisha and maiko, I learned so much from him. His storytelling was fascinating, and he brought the history, traditions, and culture of Gion to life in a way that was both engaging and easy to understand. I found myself completely absorbed in every story he shared. What made the experience even more special was how friendly and thoughtful he was throughout the tour. He gave me wonderful restaurant recommendations, shared local insights that I would never have discovered on my own, and made the whole evening feel like I was exploring Kyoto with a knowledgeable friend rather than a guide. If you’re interested in Kyoto’s culture, history, and geisha traditions, I highly recommend this tour. Thank you, Michael, for such a memorable and enjoyable evening!

Michael was a very good guide. He was able to connect with us for the explanations. He was very attentive, respecting our somewhat slow pace since I was injured in the leg and not very agile. He made the tour very interesting by sharing anecdotes and answering all our questions about life in Japan. Thanks to him, we discovered the world of Geiko and Maiko. I highly recommend it.

If you’re into the history of the area Michael is the one to go to. We saw some beautifull highlights with a mega-amount of background info, it was a late tour so we are going to re-trace these points on our next day tomorow, when they’re all opened.

If you’re visiting Kyoto, do yourself a favor and book a tour with Michael. In just a few hours, he gave us one of the most memorable experiences of our trip to Japan. His knowledge, storytelling, and passion for Kyoto’s history made every street and hidden corner come alive. What really stood out was how naturally he adapted the tour for our family. Traveling with a 10 and 8-year-old can be challenging, but he had them completely engaged and curious the entire time — which honestly says everything. Whether you’re traveling as a family, visiting Kyoto for the first time, or simply love history and culture, this tour is absolutely worth it. It felt personal, authentic, and far from a “touristy” experience. Easily the best guide we had in Japan ✨

I had an amazing tour with Michael in Kyoto today! I originally booked a group tour, but ended up getting a private tour instead, which made the experience even more special. Michael guided me through Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha district, and shared fascinating historical and cultural insights along the way. His knowledge and storytelling made the tour incredibly engaging and enjoyable. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and I felt comfortable asking lots of questions — not only about the tour itself, but also about Japan in general. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. 10/10, highly recommended!

We had such a wonderful time with Michael. The rain in Kyoto deterred others, so we got a private tour, which was even more special. Michael was super lovely and personable. He was also super knowledgeable about the history of Kyoto, Gion, and Geisha culture. We learned so much. 10/10 would recommend his tours!
