Led by a local resident of over ten years, this walking tour is shaped by daily life in Kyoto and a deep personal passion for its history, culture, and geisha traditions.
Your guide is a History passionate and Hospitality focused (has owned a Cafe and Guesthouse and worked as Head of Hospitality at the World Expo), but above all enjoys sharing the hidden stories of Gion in a relaxed and friendly way.
As we walk at an easy pace, with time for photos and questions, you will discover how the world of geisha truly functions, their arts, rules, and daily routines.
Beyond beautiful streets and temples, this tour helps you understand the atmosphere, elegance, and living culture that make Kyoto so unique.
While geisha sightings are rare, this experience will help you understand their world and the culture of Gion in a way most visitors never do.

Gion Shirakawa
A peaceful ribbon of water flowing through the heart of Gion. Lined with willow trees, traditional tea houses, and stone lanterns, Shirakawa feels like a step back in time. This is one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric streets, quiet, elegant, and deeply connected to the world of geisha and old-town life.
Tatsumi Daimyojin Shrine
A small but powerful Shinto shrine hidden beside the canal. Dedicated to protection and good fortune, Tatsumi Shrine has long been prayed to by geisha and local residents. Its intimate size and quiet presence perfectly capture the spiritual side of everyday Kyoto.

Who should do this tour? Everyone! It was absolutely awesome/beautiful. and Michael planned ahead. Everywhere we went was ADA accessible. It started at 9am and there were practically no crowds! I imagine it would have been very hard to try and do it later in the day. When? I would presume April is the best time to do it if you are aiming for Cherry Blossom season. We were unlucky and did our tour in March, so we’ll be missing it, but the entire tour path had Sakura trees all along it. You won’t regret it!! Midway is going to be the best view, in my opinion, you would see anywhere in the city without crowds! Why tour with Michael? He’s the absolute best. If you are looking for a history buff, you won’t find anyone else. He has a very unique background that I will keep a secret but he is more than happy to share if asked. He was recommended to me and I can’t be more grateful. We immediately bonded over our love of food and exchanged a ton of recommendations. What will you see? His tour is curated to try and keep you away from the “what Google recommends” attractions. He gives you the history of Kyoto all while avoiding all the crowds as much as possible. Overall, I wish I did this tour on my first day in Kyoto because there’s so much that was shown to me that I didn’t know about but wish I could spend more time experiencing. Michael truly is the embodiment of doing what you love. He made everyone in the group feel welcome and kept everyone engaged. If I could forget everything he said and do it all over again, I would!

Incredible experience. We were running a few mins behind but Michael was gracious and patient with us upon our arrival. From start to finish he gave us a breakdown of the historical significance of Kyoto and the areas we were about to experience. From the people, to the architecture to the time periods it was a perfectly balanced ratio of information , context and engagement. Never bored, frequently laughing and he also included some of his favorite meals in the area. Michael granted us with a great experience , definitely give him a chance. We loved it🙏🏾
