This trail travels alongside Lake Dunstan on the opposite side of the lake to the road that travels between Cromwell and Clyde.

The engineering involved to create this trail is stunning with clip-ons attached to the rockface in places, the Hugo Suspension Bridge plus a very good trail surface throughout the ride.

The views and scenery on this ride are fantastic and you can fully understand the history of the area - from the goldrush to the building of NZ's largest dam - by reading the information boards along the way.

What To Expect

Cycle one of NZ's Great Ride Routes from Cromwell to Clyde on one of our brand new fleet of bikes. After the ride we then return you to the start point (where you left your car) by our luxury transport. A 42km ride on an excellent Grade 1-3 trail. The surface is very good compacted gravel. Our recommendation is that riders choose our e-bike option. There is 25km of the trail without any road access. This is a self guided bike ride so you are free to move along the trail at the speed of your own group. Riders should be 10 years and older (our oldest rider so far has been nearly 80), fit and confident on a bike. You will see from the photos that this is a great trip for family and friends. The e-bikes allow you to choose your own 'assistance' levels (including 'off') which ensures that no-one has to put in too much effort or is left behind trying to catch up! With great places to stop along the way including Carrick Winery, Burger & Coffee Afloat and finishing by buying a quick celebratory drink in historic Clyde before your shuttle back to Cromwell. Single Riders will be waitlisted. If you are a single rider we will contact you as soon as possible to confirm your booking.

When you have to choose a bike company do choose NZBIKETRAILS ! Good communication, very good and comfortable bikes, friendly personnel. They really take care of you without being present. If anything happens on the trail you can call them for assistance. The Lake Dunstan trail is absolutely fabulous ! We have been cycling a lot all over the world but this one is really very very nice. Don’t miss it! And go for NZBIKETRAILS!

Great organisation and top marks to Tristan who gave us all the information at the start and was there for us when we finished. Challenging in parts made slightly more difficult with a strong north-west wind, glad we were doing the ride Cromwell to Clyde. With the wind gusting to over 50kms, it would not have been pleasant going the other way. Another tick in our completed box!

Their bikes were high quality, comfortable, and clearly well maintained, which made the ride smooth and enjoyable. The trail itself was stunning, with beautiful scenery and plenty of spots to stop for photos or take in the views. This was one of the most amazing things we did on our first and only trip to New Zealand - couldn’t recommend it more! The lupine and wild thyme were in full bloom scenting the hillsides and adding to the beauty of the dramatic scenery. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive to needs that came up while we were on the track. The bikes were super comfortable and easy to use, especially for me as a first-time e-bike rider. Couldn’t recommend this trip and this company enough!

Wonderful day on The lake Dunstan Trail. We met Tristan from NZ bike trails at Cromwell where we picked up the bikes. After setting up our bikes and receiving lots of tips and advice re the track we set off. Track was well maintained and bikes managed the climbs well. Great photo opportunities at every turn. Biked all the way thru to Clyde around 3 hours stopping photos & refreshments. Third ride was NZbiketrails. Highly recommend

Absolutely fantastic day on the Lake Dunston Bike Trail. Everything was smooth and professional from pick up. James was full of knowledge and great to talk to on the transfer, he gave us full instructions and safety talk and checked in on us along the route as well as giving us some great recommendations. The trail was breathtaking, the right amount of challenge and length, some steep hills and breathtaking turns - different views every second and the sun shone the entire day. Carrick winery and The Post Office were fantastic locations for refreshments. Bikes easy to use and cannot recommend this tour enough. One of my favorite activities so far and would do over and over! The photos don’t do it justice!

It was a wonderful, relaxing (using E-Bikes) and very interesting Bike Tour with a lot of photo-stops. Max explained us our E bikes very exactly and as he has leaved several years in Europe he knew the difference between European bikes and new Zealand bikes, especially regarding the brakes (front wheel and back wheel). As we were only two we could even choose the time, Max returns us with a luxury shuttle.

This is an amazing experience that I really recommend! We were well taken care of, got proper instructions, bikes were good (do go for the e-bike because there are some pretty tough uphills to climb!), and the beauty along the trail is stunning!
