Rethymnon Old Town
Learn about the history and the traditions of the Island, meet locals, explore the wildlife of Crete, feel our hospitality and taste the delicious Cretan cheese and cuisine . Our Day starts from Rethymnon city heading south east passing through traditional villages of Milopotamos and an area with dense vegetation, fresh aromas and unique views. The amazing field and views continues until we reach the historic Halepa Monastery, that use to be a refuge for Cretan rebels during civil wars and our second stop takes places. The unique view from the monastery is a great spot for pictures combing the highest mountain tops of Crete and a farming valley. Afterwards our amazing off-road route continues and on the way up to the shepherd‟s hut “Mitato” you will enjoy the magnificent panoramic view… If we are lucky… eagles and wild goats will stop for us to take some photos. The road will lead us up to a traditional Shepherd‟s Hut where you will find out all about the lifestyle of a shepherd and cheese making process. There the owner welcomes us with a shot of raki and fresh Graviera Cheese. Leaving Shepfherd‟s hut and working up an appetite we arrive at a traditional Cretan tavern in Axos village, where we introduce you to Cretan cuisine with plenty of food, wine and warm Cretan hospitality. On our way back we will follow an asphalt road that will lead us to the city of Rethymnon.

We were looking for a change from the excursions to the beach holiday, which is also exciting for the children. The LandRover Safari was just right for us. On this trip we were able to explore the mountains and interior of the island and learn about the culture and way of life of the locals. Our German-speaking guide was able to tell us a lot about the sights at the stops and also answer almost all our questions. For the children, the off-road section up to the shepherd's hut was especially exciting. At the end, there was a plentiful lunch with delicious local dishes in a quaint taverna. Overall, the trip is highly recommended, provided you have no problem with the altitude.

Beautiful impressions of the landscape. Visit the Honey Museum and an old monastery. Super insights into flour and goat cheese production on a farm. Finally, good food in a small tavern.

It was a great and eventful trip, away from the tourist routes. Our driver Niko entertained us fantastically, gave us lots of information about Crete and made the trip a very entertaining experience. We were picked up directly from the hotel in a Land Rover. From there we went to a honey museum with a very interesting tour, then we drove along an adventurous gravel road to a small farm. There we were allowed to milk goats and the milk was made into cream cheese on site. Very interesting and above all tasty. From there we drove to a tavern for lunch. On the way we were lucky enough to see the bearded vultures that live there in the wild. An impressive experience to see the magnificent birds with a 2.50 m wingspan circling above you.

We had a fantastic tour guide, his name was Thomas, and he was able to give us a great insight into the country and its conditions. We saw a lot that we wouldn't have seen on our own. We saw so much, from olive production to cheese production. A highlight was the cave in which Zeus was supposedly born and the museum that is also located there. Highly recommended, you just have to do this tour.
