Transportation, food, drinks, and other accommodations are not included.

What To Expect

Larnach Castle & Gardens

After purchasing your tickets, you may arrive at Larnach Castle any time between 9am and 5pm. It is a 20 minute drive from the Dunedin City Centre, and is a perfect self drive destination. On arriving at the Castle your first stop will be at the Gatehouse, this is where you present your voucher, in return you will be given an entrance ticket to present at the Castle entrance. You will be provided with a map of the Garden and a New Zealand native plant trail map, to ensure you get the most of your walk around the garden before entering the Castle. Allow at least one hour to look around the inside of the Castle. Many decide to spend more time than this. You may want to take time to visit the Ballroom Café, which opens daily at 9.30am and closes at 4.30pm. The Castle is open 365 days of the year. Come enjoy this unique experience that is truly unforgettable.

We wished we had just booked tickets to the castle and gardens and toured ourselves. The guided tour was way too long and really only took us to a couple of rooms where we spent eons in listening to a somewhat boring history. We realized after we had missed a bunch of rooms that our tour guide did not take us to. I am sure it would have been a much better experience if we did it on our own. Feel like we missed out!

We visited the castle while touring Dunedin. It's in a remote location but is worth the drive. The restoration work is excellent, especially in the ornate woodwork. We got to see many of the inside rooms and our guide shared the history of the mansion. There's a gift shop and a pretty good cafe within the building. The weather was pretty bad (heavy rain) so we didn't get to see the outdoor areas or enjoy the views.

My husband and I had a lovely visit to Larnach Castle & gardens, the castle is full of history and the views from the turret are breathtaking. The gardens are beautiful, I would highly recommend a visit to this location.

Lovely building and grounds with 360 degree views to the inlets and ocean from an ample tower. Nicely appointed to reflect its origins despite being purchased empty. The grounds are magnificent with so many trees and flowers. Plus we were sung in by a too in the tree. Ate a quick lunch in the ballroom and it was very tasty!

The most homely castle I’ve ever been to. Beautiful, from ceiling to floors, wonderful tea room, actually a ballroom, NOT to be missed. Several floors, we walked around like we were walking through somebody’s home. Gardens are not as big as English castles, but very amazing considering they had a blank canvas to start with. A 20 mins drive out of centre Dunedin, for me, the only place worth stopping to see there, as you drive through all the towns.
