Leshan Giant Buddha (Da Fo)
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-metre (233 ft) tall stone statue, built between 713 and 803 (during the Tang dynasty), depicting Maitreya. It is carved out of a cliff face of Cretaceous red bed sandstones that lies at the confluence of the Min River and Dadu River in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below its feet. It is the largest and tallest stone Buddha statue in the world and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world. The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site since 1996. History Construction started in 713 AD, led by a Chinese monk named Hai Tong. He hoped that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the shipping vessels traveling down the river. When funding for the project was threatened, he is said to have gouged out his own eyes to show his piety and sincerity. After his death, however, the construction was stuck due to insufficient funding. About 70 years later, jiedushi Wei Gao decided to sponsor the project and the construction was completed by Hai Tong's disciples in 803. Apparently, the massive construction resulted in so much stone being removed from the cliff face and deposited into the river below that the currents were indeed altered by the statue, making the water safe for passing ships. A sophisticated drainage system was incorporated into the Leshan Giant Buddha when it was built. It is still in working order. It includes drainage pipes carved into various places on the body, to carry away the water after the rains so as to reduce weathering. When the Giant Buddha was carved, a huge thirteen story wood structure (similar to the one at the Rongxian Giant Buddha) was built to shelter it from rain and sunshine. This structure was destroyed and sacked by the Mongols during the wars at the end of the Yuan dynasty. From then on, the stone statue was exposed to the elements.
Huanglongxi Ancient Town
Huanglongxi Ancient Town features its ancient culture of water culture, Buddhism culture, tea culture, ecologic farming culture integrated with colorful folklore culture, screen culture and cooking culture. For its rich natural landscape resources and humanistic and cultural tourism resources, it is famed as Historic & Cultural Town, the Hometown of Chinese Folk Art (Fire Dragon). And being a national film and television photography base, it is also called Film City and Chinese Hollywood. Besides, it was The Home of Tea and The Ancient Tea Horse Road in the ancient times on account of its long experience of growing tea. Huanglongxi Ancient town still keeps the planning style and layouts as it was in Qing Dynasty which is made up of 7 streets and 9 allies on which 76 Western Sichuan style houses are scattered. In Zheng Street, the main street stands three temples. In addition, there are 6 over 1000-year-old banyans in Huanglongxi Ancient Town which make a unique view different from other ancient town.

The trip is well coordinated from the time we booked all the way to drop off. Communication before the trip was relevant and timely. Our driver, Mr. Li Chao, was very helpful all day. He helped us with purchasing tickets, communicated with vendors on our behalf when needed, and made sure that the trip was at our own pace. Destinations on this trip are a good combination of a UNESCO Heritage Site (Leshan Giant Buddha) and a well-restored ancient town, Huanglonxi. Both worth visiting for different reasons, which makes the day balanced and enjoyable. Overall, this is a great day trip from Chengdu.

We had a relaxing and enjoyable day with Mr Wang Tao as our driver/guide. Mr Wang was punctual , in fact early , patiently waited for us. His car was spotlessly clean. He was very careful and safe in his driving . Along the way to Leshan and on the way back , he told us lots of history about China and Chengdu , and various places of interest. We had such interesting conversations. When we got to Leshan he guided us to the ticket office and sorted out our tickets and guided us to the entrance to the boat ride. And he was waiting for us when we got back from the boat ride. Lunch was very enjoyable . He suggested and helped us order our lunch. After lunch he drove us to Huanglongxi ancient town. We walked leisurely for about an hour in the quaint little town. We greatly enjoy our day trip with Mr Wang and would recommend him highly .

I only purchased transport to the sites. The driver Wang Ligen was very helpful, leading the way to the sites entrances and talking to staff to ensure out tickets and times were right. The car was spotless and we had plenty of water. Great option if you don't want to deal with large groups or public transport.

Our diver Shi Jianhua was a helpful driver! To be clear- this is not a tour and is a driver that takes you to these two great tourist destinations. That being said - Shi Jianhua was extremely helpful in making sure we got tickets for the river cruise to see the temple and walking us back from the cruises drop off point. He also took us to a great shop for noodles nearby after we saw the Buddha and took us to the ancient town. His car also had water for us if we needed it and while he did not speak English it was easy to communicate with him through a translation app. Thank you Shi Jianhua!

Despite the language barrier, the entire tour was exceptionally well organized from beginning to end. Everything ran smoothly — transportation, timing, and coordination were absolutely on point. Wanli Gen made sure we felt comfortable and informed throughout the day. Visiting the Leshan Buddha was an incredible experience, and we truly appreciated the effort that went into making it such a seamless and memorable trip. Thank you so much for this fantastic day!

Both Leshan giant buddha and Huanglongxi are amazing places to visit. As these are places set out of Chengdu, it was definitely worth hiring a private tour especially as a first-time visitor in China. My guide did everything he could to make my trip comfortable and memorable.

A superb day out, and it you don’t like tour groups this is for you!! Our driver picked my wife and I up and he was polite and charming. He drove us to Leshan where we decided what we did. Unfortunately iron the steps to the side of giant Buddha were closed so we opted for the boat trip only but we could have done both as the cave walk was available. The ancient village was fun and there are be loads of places to eat etc and it was pleasant to walk around, but I imagine when it’s full of tourists it must be a totally different experience. Both times our driver waited for us as we did things at our pace!
