Leshan Giant Buddha
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-metre (233 ft) tall stone statue, built between 713 and 803 (during the Tang dynasty), depicting Maitreya. It is carved out of a cliff face of Cretaceous red bed sandstones that lies at the confluence of the Min River and Dadu River in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below its feet. It is the largest and tallest stone Buddha statue in the world and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world. The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site since 1996. History Construction started in 713 AD, led by a Chinese monk named Hai Tong. He hoped that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the shipping vessels traveling down the river. When funding for the project was threatened, he is said to have gouged out his own eyes to show his piety and sincerity. After his death, however, the construction was stuck due to insufficient funding. About 70 years later, jiedushi Wei Gao decided to sponsor the project and the construction was completed by Hai Tong's disciples in 803. Apparently, the massive construction resulted in so much stone being removed from the cliff face and deposited into the river below that the currents were indeed altered by the statue, making the water safe for passing ships. A sophisticated drainage system was incorporated into the Leshan Giant Buddha when it was built. It is still in working order. It includes drainage pipes carved into various places on the body, to carry away the water after the rains so as to reduce weathering. When the Giant Buddha was carved, a huge thirteen story wood structure (similar to the one at the Rongxian Giant Buddha) was built to shelter it from rain and sunshine. This structure was destroyed and sacked by the Mongols during the wars at the end of the Yuan dynasty. From then on, the stone statue was exposed to the elements.
Huanglongxi Ancient Town
Huanglongxi Ancient Town features its ancient culture of water culture, Buddhism culture, tea culture, ecologic farming culture integrated with colorful folklore culture, screen culture and cooking culture. For its rich natural landscape resources and humanistic and cultural tourism resources, it is famed as Historic & Cultural Town, the Hometown of Chinese Folk Art (Fire Dragon). And being a national film and television photography base, it is also called Film City and Chinese Hollywood. Besides, it was The Home of Tea and The Ancient Tea Horse Road in the ancient times on account of its long experience of growing tea. Huanglongxi Ancient town still keeps the planning style and layouts as it was in Qing Dynasty which is made up of 7 streets and 9 allies on which 76 Western Sichuan style houses are scattered. In Zheng Street, the main street stands three temples. In addition, there are 6 over 1000-year-old banyans in Huanglongxi Ancient Town which make a unique view different from other ancient town.

Our Le Shan Buddha and Huanglongxi Ancient Town day trip was made even more enjoyable thanks to Ms Yan’s exceptional service. She was incredibly thoughtful, even preparing water and fresh fruit for us for the road trip. It was such a lovely touch that made us feel genuinely cared for. Ms Yan was a safe, skilled, and pleasant driver throughout the day, and her flexibility and willingness to help (especially when traveling with my elderly father-in-law) made the entire experience seamless and stress-free. Highly recommend her service to anyone looking for a reliable and kind driver for a day tour!

My driver, Mr. Shu Xiao-Zhong, was fabulous! His service was top notch. The day proceeded very smoothly as he arrived at my hotel early (I was already in the lobby), helped me purchase my tickets to the Leshan Buddha, made a great restaurant recommendation, and guided me to the main street of Huanglongxi. He was caring, kind, and patient as we communicated through WeChat translation app. He was also very flexible with my drop off location once back in Chengdu. I appreciated his impeccable car, safe driving, and jovial nature. He also surprised me with some fresh sumo oranges which was a sweet touch! This was certainly a worry and hassle free way of getting to Leshan from Chengdu and was well worth spending the extra money for the private driver.

The super driver 谢志友 ✨ picked us up on time at the hotel at 8:00 and patiently waited with us for the 5th friend who was late to join us before leaving all together in the direction of the first stop: the Giant Buddha of Leshan. On board the vehicle, an English-language brochure with all the information and history of the place was prepared for each passenger. Arriving at his destination, 谢志友, after parking and kindly procuring an umbrella for all travelers ❤️, accompanied us to the ticket office where he helped us buy tickets to enter the park. (It is important for foreign tourists to always have their passport with them because once registered it will act as a physical ticket for entry and shuttles). Found, as agreed, around 13:00 at the exit of the park, we then left for the ancient city of Huanglongxi. In this case, once left the vehicle, the tireless driver kindly accompanied us to discover the city. He helped us find a small place to have lunch in peace despite the 'time (it was already 15:00) also acting as an interpreter with the locals. After eating calmly with friends the 'great meal in a restaurant with terrace over the water, 谢志友 reappeared almost magically to drive us around the city complying with our requests until, once tired and satisfied, he led us back to the vehicle and safely escorted us back to the hotel. Fantastic day. The rain, which kept us company throughout the first leg, actually made our visit to the Buddha and the temple even more beautiful and suggestive. (Don't worry: with comfortable sneakers, you go everywhere and at the entrance they also offer shoe covers and capes for the most unwary travelers). The ancient city is a place full of alleys and shops in which to walk and make unique purchases. Beautiful Gulong temple (the oldest). 谢志友 thank you very much
