Discover one of Madeira’s most authentic walks in the late afternoon, in a small private group (1-4 people), away from the crowds and in total connection with nature.

Along the way, we will walk through the historic Levadas do Moinho and Levada Nova, where you will have the opportunity to contemplate the beautiful Levada Nova waterfall and cross a tunnel excavated in the rock, originally built for the transportation of water.

During the experience, I will share stories and curiosities about these levadas, the endemic flora, the surrounding valleys and landscapes, as well as the agricultural basins that have shaped this region for centuries.

The walk ends in the charming Ponta do Sol harbour, with the possibility to dine at sunset, in a simply unforgettable setting.

What To Expect

Private group from 1 to 4 people. Walking in Levada Nova and Levada do Moinho, flat circular path with a total of 8.5 km, waterfall, tunnel, levada and endemic plants, also the traditional stone walls built for cultivation of products. Not advisable for people with vertigo. Included: pick-up and drop-off, insurance, Guide certificate and tourist license from Portugal.

Paulo was the best tour guide for this hike. He took his time and went over the history, all the different plants, birds and even talked about local recommendations for food and drinks. He made this hike well worth it. My wife and I were in awe of the views and we felt safe and secure with him being our guide. Paulo is someone we will definitely hike with and book with again for sure. If you want someone who knows what they are doing then he is your guy! He made this trip perfect

First hike of our holiday and it didn’t disappoint, it was the most incredible hike with unreal views and the best private tour guide! Paulo gave us lots of information every step of the way, told us where the best spots were for the best pictures! He went all out and gave us the best experience!

Paulo is the best travel guide imaginable. He picked us up on time at the hotel, was very taken care of and accompanied us safely through the Levadas. We would love to do another tour with him next time. 😊 We really liked it. Top! Finally, there were still great tips for our stay.

Paulo is an excellent guide! I felt like I was hiking with a friend. I always felt safe and I never felt rushed through the hiking. Paulo knows which hikes to do at the best times. If I ever return to Madeira, then I will try to schedule more hiking with him.

The hike was amazing! Really get to see the farms on the mountain sides and how they use the levada system. Richard was an excellent guide and made the whole experience comfortable. Before the hike we stopped at a small local coffee spot. After the hike we had a picnic at the beach with a good selection of Portuguese food i hadn't tried before. Richard was kind enough to take me to the angels water fall as a bonus. We ended the tour with stopping at a poncha spot in the mountains and it was the best poncha i had in madeira!

The private tour was a great one on one experience. Paulo was very knowledgeable and personable. We stated at 5:00 pm and encountered only a few people returning from the Moinho and the Nova was completely void of people. The Moinho levada walk was 4 km in on the older system about 1/3 of the way up the valley. The most scenic part of the tour of carved out walls/tunnel and waterfall, which is on the newer built Nova levada. To get there you most climb up several hundred steps at the end of the Moinho walk. The Nova is 4 km back and runs quite a bit higher along the valley wall and in several places there are no railings. If you are afraid heights, BEWARE!! The entire walk took us 3hrs 20 min. Absolutely perfect with an amazing local guide.
