What To Expect

Malt candy originated in the Egyptian era and became popular as a sweetener with the development of agriculture. In Japan, it was widely used in Toyama's pill-making industry by the late Edo period, and many candy shops existed in the Taisho era. However, with the advent of the Showa era, the popularity of sugar and the decline in pill-making artisans led to its decline, leaving only Shimakawa Candy Store. At this shop, you can enjoy traditional malt candy while learning about its long history.

Founded in Showa 11 (1936), the first generation, Minoru Ikeda, established the shop in its current location as a Japanese-Chinese herbal wholesaler. Shortly after the war, the shop began manufacturing and selling "Hankontan," a medicine that was popular in the Edo period. Today, the shop continues to pursue the world of Japanese-Chinese herbal medicine, focusing on traditional Japanese medicines. Here, you can learn about the history of medicine in Toyama.

It was a fantastic experience making local food, and understanding the roots (historical significance) of why and how the foods were made. From preparation, to end edible product with easy to follow instructions. The other memorable experience was how traditional drugs were made for centuries. The hands approach was the added/ extra high-lite. All of us in the tour had opportunities to try, and fail..... The finale at the restaurant, ( sorry forgot the name, drank too much) was delightful and delicious. It was an over-all WIN-WIN, all day long.

  • Don't miss it!

We had the chance to go on this tour with friends, and we had a terrific time. Highlight of the morning was the visit of the beautifully modern Mazusushi shop in Nanto where the chef gave us a class on how to make 'masuzushi', the local specialty of trout sashimi on top of rice with vinegar that we learned to wrap in bamboo leaves. It is a hands-on experience not to miss when in the prefecture! Later on, we visited a traditional medicine shop and factory in Toyama where we were told of the city's old history of medicament making before trying our hand at manufacturing tiny pills on an antique machine (not easy!). Our visit concluded with a Japanese style dinner: a splendid time was had by all!
