Guided personally by author and storyteller, Gerald Garner, this is the most insightful tour you will find about Cape Town. An absolute must-do experience. This is not merely a tour but a mesmerizing storytelling experience. It will provide you with insight and understanding of the history and make-up of this fascinating city. And it will make you understand the entire South African story. With this knowledge, you will enjoy the rest of your visit to the city and country much more!
This 4-hour walking tour is easy, covering 3,5km. It is for the curiously minded, but also includes opportunity for sightseeing, photography, experiencing the vibe of the city – and even a stop or two for drinks and sampling a local delicacy.
The tour focuses on the background story of Cape Town. We start off with the 1870s Industrial Revolution and the Scramble for Africa before returning to pre-colonial history and moving on all the way to the early 20th Century.

V&A Waterfront
The tour starts at Ginja Restaurant at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel, V&A Waterfront. Simply the spot with the best view of the city and Table Mountain, as well as the surrounding harbour - originally excavated under the supervision of Prince Alfred, son on Queen Victoria in the era of British expansion into Africa.
We amble along the walkways of the Canal District, stopping along the way for storytelling and take in the views from Battery Park with its skate park, basket ball courts and more. A great green rooftop space in the city.
The fee is for guiding/storytelling.
Any food or drinks along they way is for the customer's own account on the day.

If you want to learn about history rather than just snap trope pics, I highly recommend spending time with Gerard! I did the 1/2 day Understanding Cape Town walking tour on my first morning in Cape Town, and it was the perfect introduction. Gerard is extremely knowledgeable and presents the history of not only Cape Town, but Africa, in an accessible and engaging way. What I learned helped me to understand what I saw in the following weeks in Africa from a newly informed perspective. We stopped for refreshments at a delightful place called Seven Colours Eatery which I went back to the following day for lunch - also recommended! If I'm ever back in Cape Town I'd love to continue on with the Contemporary Cape Town city tour. Thank you Gerard!

Even before our trip, Gerald was incredibly helpful in giving us recommendations and answering any questions we had. We did the Understanding Cape Town Walking Tour on our first day, and it was great to get a better idea of where everything was located in the city and to develop a deeper understanding of the historical context. Gerald was an engaging storyteller and was extremely knowledgeable. One of the highlights of the tour was stopping for a quick bite at Seven Colours Eatery. We enjoyed it so much that we went back on our last day for a full meal. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in learning more about Cape Town's history.

Gerald focused on the history of South Africa and Capetown. He used an interesting story telling approach. The 3 of us were very engaged and found this tour a great way to begin our time in Capetown. Very highly recommended. Thank you Gerald!

Gerald used stories and immediacy ("imagine Prince Alfred standing here, with the same view you are seeing now") to bring history to life. The focus of this tour was the founding and growth of Cape Town into a city, and the creation of the country of South Africa. Gerald is an excellent storyteller and easily kept my attention. The pace was leisurely, with a couple of stops to sit for a story.

Gerald is not only a very knowledgeable guide, he is also a great storyteller. We really enjoyed our walk with him, learned so much about the history of the city, South Africa and European colonialism. It’s an easy walk with some nice stops for coffee or local snacks along the way. Would definitely do it again!

This is a must for history lovers. Gerald, our guide, was so generous with his time that we had way longer than our 4 hours. We learnt so much about the complex history of South Africa as we strolled around Cape Town. The focus is much more on the story-telling than the walk, which isn't onerous at all. We enjoyed some refreshments along the way & really appreciated Gerald's amazing breadth of knowledge & his lively story telling. This tour set us up for our few days in Cape Town, & Gerald gave us some useful tips to maximize our time in this gorgeous city. Highly recommended!

Excellent tour to get deep and/or more insights into Capetown and SouthAfrica; very sophisticated and thus not comparable to regular sightseeing tours

This tour was flat out TERRIFIC! I enjoyed every minute. Gerald is so personable and such a great storyteller and historian. If you're interested in understanding how Cape Town came to be what it is today, you're in the right place. He'll show you wonderful places you didn't realize existed. There's so much more to Cape Town than Table Mountain. I strongly recommend this tour.
