Plaza Mayor
The name of the plaza has changed over time. It has been known as "Plaza del Arrabal", "Plaza de la Constitución", "Plaza Real", "Plaza de la República" and now "Plaza Mayor". These names reflect events, history and reign in Spanish history. "Plaza del Arrabal" was the original name of the present day "Plaza Mayor". The "Plaza del Arrabal" was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed "Plaza de la Constitución". It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the "Plaza Real". In 1873, the name changed to "Plaza de la República". At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of "Plaza Mayor".

Frederico was a great guide showing us the highlights of the beautiful palace. Walking around the old Madrid was also informative.

Great tour company and guide Frederico was fantastic! I was the only person to book the time slot and instead of them cancelling, they offered me a one-on-one tour for no extra cost! Frederico was incredibly knowledgeable, patient with my questions, and beloved by every staff member we saw at the Palace! I would definitely recommend this tour agency. The Palace is beautiful, full of history, easy to navigate, and was not busy in January!

I feel I know so much about the Spanish history and the kings of Spain! Each room has a different decoration, all of them memorable. Thank you Beatrice! Excellent guided tour!

The tour operator had multiple groups go out at the same time, and we were unfortunate to be in the group where the guide was not good at all. He did not even bother to introduce himself so I don't know what his name is. He did not check who the participants were and assumed we were all following. There's a lot of rushed walking with awkward dead silence. I dont know if he even kept track of the tour participants if we were all still with the group because I fell behind some times to take pictures as he went by too fast to allow us to take the palace rooms in. This was our last tour in our Spain holiday so I have a lot to compare this tour with. When he spoke, he sounded like he followed a memorized script in his head, and on the rare occasion that someone asked a question, he couldn't provide a clear answer. Very disappointed with the tour but giving it 2 stars anyway for the little info we learned from his script and for the tour operator delivering in getting us into the palace.

The tour of the palace is certainly worth the time. The rooms and information relayed was worthwhile and definitely something to behold. The city walking tour part was ‘meh.’…it was mostly walking to the palace….I’d recommend either expanding that part of the tour or skip it all together (don’t advertise it as such).

Rarely I write reviews. Rodrigo is the reason we enjoyed this tour so much. He’s knowledgeable, funny, witty, engaging with all ages and cultures, kind with everyone (including every single person that works in the palace), taking pictures in the best spot of everyone in the group (!), giving kindly info to those who thought he works in the palace. Diamonds can be found in the rarest of places. Book without a hesitation! You will remember his very entertaining and educational stories for ever. Two hours did feel like 2 minutes. Thanks Rodrigo! I wish I had some cash to give you so you could buy a coffee on us. The 2 Greek ladies.
