Meteora
The 24 monasteries emerged on the countless summits of the rocks from the 14th until the 16th century, 6 of them remaining to be explored and admired by all. These monasteries became the centers of the Orthodox creed in the Byzantine era, having produced some of the best pieces of religious art and craft and still possessing a collection of precious manuscripts, which today are on display in their museums. The Meteora monasteries have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and the Meteora-Antichassia region has been officially declared a Natura 2000 Ecological Zone by the Greek Ministry of Environment, for the protection of rare species of birds and flowers.
Agios Nikolaos Anapaphsas
The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is the first Monastery that we encounter on our way to the Holy Meteora and was founded at the end of the 14th century. For the name Anapafsas there are numerous interpretations two of which are the most popular. The first one is that the name Anapafsas was attributed by one of the monastery’s benefactors, while the second explanation has to do with the monastery’s position being the first to be encountered on the way up and probably served to the pilgrims and other visitors as a resting place before continuing on.

The tour was amazing and our guide was incredibly engaging and funny. The monasteries are beautiful, with excellent examples of Byzantine and Italian art and architecture. This is a truly unique place filled with natural and man made beauty. Highly recommend!

It was a wonderful tour with Visit Meteora! Fully booked online but directly in The Office of Visit Meteora, a new bus was used and we could still book for our tour. The guide spoke English well, was passionate and clearly knew the history and everything around the monasteries and Meteora! The driver was also very knowledgeable and that is not a superfluous luxury there!

Pick-up at hotel Spanias and a very welcome from drivers and guide: both were great! Nice, clean black Visit Meteora van and small group. Visited: Varlaam, Great Meteora and Roussanou and lots of opportunities to take pictures of the others. We had a car, but to be driven around along winding roads with lots of tourists, getting info and no parking hassle was great, we had a blast!

Excellent tour, fantastic value for money! We enjoyed it immensely and our guide and driver were lovely people, so helpful, friendly and informative. We had a completely stress free experience and were so pleased we picked this tour. We got to go inside three of the six active monasteries and the scenery was amazing. Loved it!

Exactly what we wanted. On time, informative, well organised, great choice of route, friendly and helpful. They promised we'd be back in time for our bus, and they delivered. I don't normally do tours, as I prefer independent travel, but I think this was the best way to see Meteora if you are short on time.

Very good tour with ontime pick-up. The guide has explained a lot of things and the time spent on the way from a monastery to another was very productive. We had also a very good weather!

The van picked us up at the hotel and couldn’t have been more convenient. The driver was safe and the guide was super knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. They took us to the best monasteries to visit and it was incredible. Couldn’t recommend this company more if you’re in the area.
