We begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. We will then climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900ft, cliff. The Barranco Wall, also known as the Kissing Wall, is approximately 3 ft. wide. This narrow section is famous because climbers often place a kiss on the rock as they pass by. Climbers also “hug” the outcrop and breathe a sigh of relief on the other side as they realize it wasn’t nearly as intimidating as it looked. From the top of the Barranco Wall, we cross a series of hills and valleys until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One more steep climb up leads us to Karanga Camp. This shorter day will prepare us for higher elevation at the summit.

Around midnight we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent but short breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak— the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Here, you can take a moment to reflect on your tremendous accomplishment. Take a few pictures from the ‘Rooftop of Africa’ to memorialize this special moment. From the summit, we make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and steep; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate where we will be met by our driver who will transport us back to the hotel in Moshi. Here, we can relax with some refreshments, perhaps a local Kilimanjaro beer, while we wait to receive our summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in Moshi.

I couldn't have been happier! The trip far exceeded all of my expectations. My guide met me at the airport and took me to the hotel. I enjoyed the hotel so much, I ended up staying there after the Kilimanjaro trek and used it as my base of operations. As for the trek itself, I was astounded by the level of support from the Roam Wild team. My guide (Ezekiel "Living" Kombe) was amazing. He was with me every step of the way and was spot on with his advice for pace, clothing, hydration, and everything else. My chef (Coleman) prepared the absolute best food. You won't go hungry on this trek! My server (Clinton) did an incredible job as well. All of the porters worked so hard and made everything super easy for me. Although I travelled solo, I met many people on the trek using different organizers. Roam Wild provided nothing less than any of the others. I particularly liked that all the porters were provided with Roam Wild clothing so they were easy to spot. A few other companies did the same, but most did not. I can very enthusiastically recommend Roam Wild for your Kilimanjaro trek...and for post-trek activities while in Tanzania (Safari, coffee plantation tour, etc.).

If you’re thinking about booking your Mount Kilimanjaro trek with Roam Wild Adventure: JUST DO IT! You won’t regret it :) My husband and I recently completed the 8-day Lemosho Route to the summit of Kilimanjaro with Roam Wild, and hands down, this was one of the best trips of our lives. and we travel a LOT. Not only is this trek great value-for-money, but Roam Wild also truly stands apart from the larger tour companies. This is not a “one-size-fits-all” experience where they rush as many people up the mountain as possible. Here, every single person is treated with personal care and attention. The guides were phenomenal, especially Ezekiel, who was unbelievably kind, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. You can ask them anything about the mountain, local culture, wildlife, or environment, and they will happily share their passion with you. Their genuine love for Kilimanjaro and for nature shines through in every interaction. Throughout the climb, we had regular medical check-ins, plenty of delicious hot food, abundant clean water, and endless encouragement. Every single team member, from the guides to the porters, was full of warmth, smiles, and support. Their calm presence and positivity helped us believe in ourselves and ultimately reach the summit of Uhuru Peak which had previously felt impossible!! Their motto, Dream, Believe, Achieve, is absolutely real (along with pole pole!). our Roam Wild Adventure team truly felt like family. They took immense pride in their work and made the experience deeply personal and special for us every step of the way. Little details like serving morning coffee in the tent, ginger tea during summit night, picking up litter from the trail, pointing out animals and plants. We feel so lucky and grateful to have shared this life-changing journey with them. If you are a traveler looking for a unique, customized Mount Kilimanjaro trek experience, not a cookie-cutter tour, this is the company for you. They deliver authenticity, care, and adventure in a way that’s hard to find. They are so communicative throughout the process and give a feeling of total safety and security in the most challenging terrains imaginable. Thank you, Roam Wild Adventure, for an unforgettable journey. We can’t wait to return and experience more Tanzania adventures with you!

  • An Adventure of a Lifetime with Roam Wild Adventure

We had the incredible opportunity to experience both a safari and the climb of a lifetime with Roam Wild Adventure, and I can confidently say they are the best in the game. Our journey began with a safari, guided by the amazing Will. His knowledge, patience, and eagle-eyed spotting abilities to spot wildlife (seriously, leopards from miles away!) made it an unforgettable experience. The camps were cozy, food was amazing and we had the chance to dine under millions of stars in the middle of Serengeti, the itinerary was seamless, and every day felt like a new adventure. Then came Kilimanjaro during the rainy season—a challenge I’ll never forget. As a city girl, I’ll admit I wanted to give up on the first day when we were greeted by relentless downpours. But Benson and Ezekiel, our incredible guides, had this magical way of lifting our spirits. Every single day, no matter how soaked or tired we were, they kept us moving forward with their energy and encouragement. Summit night was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It was the coldest, darkest night, with barely any oxygen, and we were hiking 8 or 9 hours through a snowstorm. The mountain lit up like a Christmas tree from our headlamps (we submitted on Christmas Day, 12am), and Benson, Medi, and Ezekiel’s cheering echoed across the slopes, urging us on; and somehow, against all odds, we made it to the top of Africa. Standing there, at 19,341 feet, was surreal—a moment I’ll carry with me forever. The entire Roam Wild team was nothing short of amazing. From Cypi’s mountain-Michelin three star meals to Medi’ kindness at every meal, to Benson’s hand picked mango at the Mango garden, they created an experience we’ll never forget. All the porters are the unsung heroes who carried the weight of the journey, both literally and figuratively. After the trek, Roam Wild went above and beyond. We hired a car to travel to Nairobi, a 7-hour journey, and Ezekiel personally insisted on accompanying us to ensure we crossed the border smoothly. He left at 7 a.m. and didn’t return to Arusha until close to 10 p.m. that night. I am just beyond words. This wasn’t just an adventure; it was a life-changing experience. Roam Wild made us feel at home, safe, and supported. We came to Tanzania as strangers, but we left feeling like family. Thank you, Roam Wild Adventure, for the memories of a lifetime.

  • The most OUTSTANDING crew on Kilimanjaro!

    - Review from Tripadvisor

To say Ezekiel and his crew go above and beyond to make every bit of the trek a comfortable success is a major understatement. To give anecdotal perspective, we stopped by this 700-year old tree where they took the time to talk about its place in nature. Meanwhile, a large group passed by where the guide merely stated "This is an old tree" and then moved on. The crew has decades of experience climbing up and down the mountain on all the routes. They've handled all kinds of client situations imaginable. Not once did we ever feel like we were a burden to them. They made sure our comfort and success in summiting Kilimanjaro was their #1 priority. There are many considerations when selecting a tour operator for a trek of this nature. This is not a walk-in-the-park operation as you're out in the wilderness for 8 days with limited access to resources and outside help. For the entire journey to go smoothly can only be the result of decades of experience on the mountain knowing how to handle all kinds of situations (clients' physical fitness levels, weather patterns, altitude sickness, etc.). While there's a long list of unbelievably incredible things Roam Wild did for our 7-person group, the things that really stood out: - Adaptability: Our group naturally would split into 2 groups during each day's hike due to difference in fitness levels, they were able to split the guides up to accompany each group - Patience: They have a godly amount of patience. No matter how slow you may be, they make every effort to make sure you safely make it to camp each day at your pace - Service Quality: Firstly, it's a herculean display of strength and endurance that the porters are transporting not only all our camp supplies and equipment but also carrying 15kg of our gear on their heads from camp to camp without a single complaint (not that we would hear anyway). I wouldn't have lasted a day on this trip if I had to carry my own duffel. Secondly, every little thing they did to ensure our comfort went a long way. Examples: they'd clear all the rocks from our camp site before pitching our tents so that we could lie comfortably; they'd dust off our boots as soon as we got back to camp; and they weren't even wearing gloves on summit day (I had on 3 layers for my hands in addition to hand warmers) so that they had the dexterity to help us with anything at all from opening food wrappers to getting our water bottles to helping us with zippers. All-in-all, hiking at high altitudes has its dangers and altitude sickness should not be underestimated. Their standard of care had our safety and comfort as top priorities. They exceeded all expectations, which is why I'm very happy to write this review. You can't go wrong with choosing them.

We did the 8 day Lemosho trek. Incredible experience all around. Lead guide Ezekiel comes from over 20 years of experience in the industry, and it shows through his explanations, judgement, and handling of customer service. Many times on the trek he made an effort to accommodate our group's needs, whether it was splitting up into two groups, eating gluten free, getting more peanut butter, or ascending to a higher base camp before summiting. Based on our interactions with other groups, other tour companies and guides might not be as thorough and detailed in their explanations, but still get away with charging more. Food was above my expectations, but some days could have been better in terms of carb (i.e. pasta+rice)-to-protein ratio (and/or sauce). The other guides CP and Deo were also both very hospitable, knowledgable, and accommodating. Roam Wild is actually a fairly new company (~3 years), so their equipment is all in great condition, from the sleeping bags (which btw were incredibly warm) to the tents. Beyond that, as an up and coming tour operator, they really do go above and beyond to ensure all your needs are met to ultimately create an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend!

Ezekiel and the team were so accomodating and helpful to use during the climb. They honored every request we had for our group of 7 and really focused on safety on the way up! His knowledge of the pacing and time required was so on point and the 20 yrs of experience really showed. The porters were great and some even did extra work for us during the trip. Communication was perfect through whatsapp and Ezekiel even helped us get around town during our couple of days there. Great job accomodating all of the different food allergies. Overall I super recommend Ezekiel's team as they were super professional and friendly. The 8 day lemosho was also one of the best tours for us to acclimate in time for the summit! The guides also took the time to explain different plants or facts about the mountain to us unlike some other tour groups. We literally heard another group guide go: "this is an old tree" and then made their group keep walking while our guides explained the history around every region. Views were amazing we had no clouds and the perfect sights tour was 2nd half of Feb 2024. Jambo!

Every detail about our trip was exceptional - from the planning to the quality of the gear we rented (being warm and dry really matters!) to the guides, the food, the support - amazing! Ezekiel, Michael and the crew of support we had were respectful, warm and welcoming - we could not have wished to have met nicer people. Importantly for us, the support team were well treated and not taken advantage of. Well done Roam Wild, please keep this up. Also importantly there seemed a genuine care and concern for the cleanliness and preservation of Mt Kilimanjaro 👏. Watching the sun rise from the roof of Africa was simply a dream come true for us. This company is highly recommended by me.

  • 8 Day Lemosho Route with Roam Wild Adventure

    - Review from Tripadvisor

I did the 8-day Lemosho route in February 2023 of this year with roam wild Adventure with 4 other ladies. For our group of 5, we had a lead guide, 2 assistant guides, a chef, a waiter, and 17 porters. One of the porters was the lead camp porter, who organized our camp setup every night and helped clean off the dust/dirt from our pants and shoes every day when we got to camp. Another porter was the toilet porter, in charge of setting up the toilet tent and maintaining the toilet for us. (It was always clean!) Our meals always included some hot soup, protein, carbs, veggies and fruit. There was always hot porridge at breakfast, along with eggs, sausage, crepes. One night at dinner we were just casually talking about how awesome crepes with bananas and nutella would be, and voila! guess what the chef made us for breakfast the next morning! Our guides Ezekiel, Michael, and Peeta did a superb job of leading us up the mountain. We had health checks done daily at breakfast and at dinner time – oximeter to check our oxygen levels and heart rates. We were also quizzed daily on how much water we drank during the day, how did we feel – any headaches or nausea, how is your appetite, etc. We were well taken care of the entire trip, and we were also well fed. Our pace was determined by the guides. It was slow - slower than what I would normally do for a hike, but deemed necessary in order to properly acclimate to the reduced oxygen as we climbed higher. ‘Pole pole’ (pronounced pole-a pole-a) means ‘slowly’ in Swahili, and we heard this a lot over the next few days. Since the porters didn’t have to worry about elevation acclimating, they would march ahead of us and get to the campsite a few hours ahead of us. Once the camp sites were set up, some of the porters would backtrack to us and take over carrying our daypacks for us. It was always an awesome sign when we saw our porters coming our way because it meant that we get a load off and that we were only about an hour away from camp. I don’t know if every trekking company does this, so I thought it was a very welcome gesture. I’m happy to report that our entire group of 5 made it to the summit. Some of the porters came with us on our midnight summit to help carry our backpacks so we wouldn’t get too tired as we had over 3000 ft to climb in the dark. Once again, this was another welcome gesture, as I didn’t see any other groups with porters during our ascent. Overall it was an amazing once in a lifetime adventure, if I were to hike up Kilimanjaro again, I would pick Roam wild Adventure again. Not only were we well taken care of, but it was obvious that the guides and porters are also well taken care of and properly equipped.

  • We DID IT! Yes you Can...Si se Puede !

One of the best trips I've taken yet ! I decided a few years ago after meeting Helen Soto the owner of Roam Wild Adventures, to add Kilamanjaro on my bucket list. This would be a great way to celebrate my 50th birthday. Well, we all know how that went and 2 years later, post covid-19, I DID IT ! The best part of this adventure was completing this adventure with 4 friends some from out of state. Let me start by saying I was very impressed by the attention to small detail this company has to offer. The porters and guides are very friendly they make u feel welcome and safe at all times. The food was incredible. The "Chef" Oria makes sure you are well fed with proper nutrition for the everyday miles while trekking. I miss the delicious healthy meals, especially the porridge😋 and soups made for us daily. Three full beautiful delicious meals are provided as well as snacks to take with you along the daily trekk. They provide warm water for face and hands first thing in the morning, they carry and set up portable flushable toilets.... yes flushable toilets for base camps ! The biggest thing for me was how in tune the guides Petta, Michael and Ezekiel became after a day or so with everyone. They knew when we needed extra "breakie breakies" along the way. The warmth of the porters is heartfelt they truly cared for our well-being. Once they reached a base camp and set up, some came back to meet us along the way to take the weight of our packs off, which was incredible they were trekking double. The tents are very sturdy and the sleeping bags very warm if you decide on the option to rent and not carry the extra weight flying. We opted for the 8 day Lemosho Route which made it possible for us all to acclimated gradually. I am a chronic asthmatic, and the worst part for me was getting out of a warm tent to go to the "Office" which we named our bathroom. The drastic temperature change would make me feel as if I just ran a mile but once in the warmth my breathing would regulate. For any type of adventure it is imperative to let the company know of any medical issues and medications that you take. Especially getting a medical clearance as well. The mountain has helicopter evacuation for any emergencies. The guides carry oxygen in case it is warranted and have first aid kits. Every morning before breakfast our oxygen level is monitored for precautionary measures. My favorite part aside summit day was the beautiful energy felt while everyone sings in honor to Mt. Kilamanjaro. My overall experience was mesmerizing. Watching Mother Nature's magnificent 🌅 sunrise while on the mountain with awesome people was a memory of a Lifetime!

I’m still processing the 8 days I spent trekking up Mt. Kilimanjaro with Roam Wild Adventure. To say it was amazing is an understatement. We were 3 friends from the US on our first big trip and we could not have been happier. It was a challenging climb for sure, but we were in excellent hands. P.S. - I never realized how good it would be to have 3 hot meals a day prepared by a local Tanzanian chef…on the mountain! Excellent excellent!
