I was not given an official ticket after rescheduling a trip with Viator and the numbers given on the call didn’t add up to what I was actually charged, and therefore leaving this review on an older trip, where I’m allowed to ‘write a review’. I took the trip with my parents from SF to Muir Woods and Sausalito at 1 PM from Pier 33 on May 9, 2026. We were about 12 people in the van. The driver claimed he was german and had been in the US for 30 years. Over the rear view mirror, he put up what seemed like a laminated note stating that in the US hospitality industry, paying a 20% tip was customary. As someone that’s based in the US, this isnt true and foreigners may very well feel forced to comply since it comes across as a legal requirement. The trip began, our driver was jovial and things were totally normal until he prepared to park the van at Sausalito when he explicitly began announcing about how customers typically don’t have cash on them to tip him and he would totally hate for that to be any of us, so he parked by the Bank of America ATM so we would all make sure to withdraw cash in the 1 hour that we’d spend in Sausalito to tip him. As someone that came well prepared with cash to pay a tip, I thought his demand was inappropriate and it felt kind of like a shake-down. When we left Sausalito, most people took the ferry and didn’t even care to return to the van probably because they didn’t want to have to bother with his demands. It was 5 of us in the end. When we got down, he pulled up over the curb. As my parents and I got off, he quickly got down to the sidewalk, came up to me and asked who was handling the tip. I said I was. He stood less than a foot away, looking down at me demanding a 20% tip as was stated in the van and made racist comments against us. I refused and began explaining that I disagree with his laminated note. He began raising his voice when another white bystander stopped by on the sidewalk to defend my parents and I; and confirmed that tipping was voluntary and apologized to my parents for having to listen to racist comments. I wonder how such drivers/members are part of the Viator team cause this was a horrendous experience to what was an otherwise normal trip. I strongly advise against choosing to plan trips with this company.

We were picked up at one of the designated locations, but then had to make our way back to our car on our own (2 miles away—which is not insignificant after the hike in the woods with two 12-year-olds). I presumed a pick-up point is also a drop-off. Not so, in this case. I recommend making that more obvious in the description. That was an unforeseen—and ultimately more expensive—challenge than necessary. The driver was engaging and made his script more interesting than just reciting a well-worn narrative. He did a good job. I have enjoyed other Viator excursions I’ve done in the past, so will give it another shot, but this was disappointing logistically. That said, Muir Woods and Sausalito are worth any time you can spend.

What an awe-inspiring visit! The tour was well done. Our guide, George, was informative and very clear about directions, expectations, and the options available for the tour stops. Muir Woods was incredible, with enough time to take the longer trail and still have time for gift shopping. The trip to Sausalito gave us some city background and time to explore. We highly recommend!

Our driver was fun and knowledgeable in sharing information pertinent to the tour. We especially appreciated his genuine interest in, and enthusiasm for preserving both the history of the area and in the fate of the trees. He was very clear on when things needed to happen.

Good experience at Muir woods. I wish we had some more time at Muir woods. Sausalito tour could have been better.
