Andes Museum
The Museum is located in a 19th century building in the historic City centre of Montevideo, which was declared national heritage. The exhibit includes pictures, documents, personal belongings and airplane debris, among other relevant items. A timeline provides a day-to-day account of the events that took place in the “Valley of Tears”, as well as of important events that were occuring at the same time in other parts of the world, during those never-ending 72 days. 400 square metres, 40 bilingual panels, 30 cabinets, several screens and original debries, shows you all the relevant facts about this unique story of survival. Our activities (Art contests, conferences, etc. related to several topics in connection with the story) can be followed via our web page.

Small, but comprehensive ‘museum’ telling of the aircraft crash in 1972. Excellently narrated (also in English 😊), including an experience in a refrigerated container at minus 23C for good measure! Highly recommended.

This is a fantastic museum that really brings the survivors' suffering to life for visitors. We highly recommend a visit.

I really enjoyed the visit to the De Los Andes Museum. I think it allows you to have a vision more attached to this event than just watching movies which is what you normally do. It has many objects from the Fairchild 571 flight, well preserved or also based as faithfully as possible. The service was pleasant and the staff is attentive and able to provide support to their visitors. It is in a tourist area and easy to reach. Tickets are easily accessible and well priced. Although I think the following could have also bettered my experience.☺️ -Know the price of gift shop objects on the platform beforehand. -Allow sections where photos can be taken. -Perform more activities, since the only one is the cold simulator of the mountain range. A trivia game maybe? The idea is to pay tribute to all those who flew on the plane, but I think in the right way it could serve as a historical strategy, and also keep their memory alive. -Changing the floor in certain areas, gives the impression that the boards would give way, plus they sound a lot that can distract attention since there are many objects and informative reading material. There could be a before and after area. What survivors looked like before and what they look like now.

It’s difficult to express in words the magnitude of this experience. There is an extraordinary amount of information, artifacts and even a simulator at this museum. Whether you have an hour or a day to dedicate, it will be a life-altering experience.

Museum was well laid out. Intro movie was thorough and informative. Displays and descriptions gave you a good sense of what the passengers went through.

A wonderful museum about the events, focusing on the human experience and how the survivors came together to create the survival miracle.

Visit that is shocking because although there is nothing that is not known, it is a way to pay tribute to all those involved in the accident, and it places us perfectly in time and place of the event. It shows an exceptional development and account of events. The visit must be unmissable. Friendly staff willing to make the visit more enriching.

The 1972 Museo Andés is rightly rated as the top attraction in Montevideo, because it is poignant how detailed and multifaceted both the tragic crash of Fairchild FH 227 in the Andes with the young, hopeful departed rugby team from Montevideo in October 1972 and the search and rescue with diverse objects and media are portrayed. It describes phases of decision-making and coping with the existential crisis as well as individual fates and conveys the lessons hard won by the survivors. The museum was initiated by great personal commitment of the curator with his young team and designed with the support of survivors and relatives of the victims, the east side of the building is one of the 3 oldest standing buildings in Montevideo. The museum is less than 30 metres from Plaza Matriz and is definitely worth seeing!
