Dam Square
1. The dam, Also known as the City built on trees: Due to the soil in Amsterdam consisting of a thick layer of fen and clay, some buildings in the city are built on wooden poles that are fixed in a sandy layer that is approximately 11 meters deep. Since the old days, the houses in Amsterdam were known to have been built on wooden foundation piles that are driven deep into the clay, peat, and water until they reach the first layer of solid sand.

This was such a great tour! Sander knew so much about the geography, history, architecture, restaurants, shopping, the actual red light business and much more. He made sure to answer everyone’s questions while not getting off track. Definitely one of the most interesting and informative tours we’ve ever experienced. He also was excellent at keeping track of our group as a few people would wander a bit at times. Highly recommends this tour with Sander!

The lady who provided our tour did seem very knowledgeable about the history of the red light district. I asked a question about a statue on the tour and she said she didn’t know and it’s not part of this tour. She said, “Basically” a minimum of every others sentence. That was extremely distracting.

Our guide gave us insights and culture on the Amsterdam sex industry. Also, we visited a cannabis shop. The tour included history also. It lasted about an hour and 35 minutes.
