Mdina is a gem of the Maltese islands – but every diamond was rough at some point.
Learn why people used to spit on an ancient statue as they entered the city and why invading pirates once tried to trick the citizens of Mdina with free bread.
See the chapel where St Agatha once granted a miracle to save the city, and hear of the terrible crimes carried out by a rich man who wanted revenge on his lover.
You’ll also get to see where a huge pile of gold coins was found buried beneath Mdina, and learn why a ghostly bride photo-bombs happy couples in these narrow streets.
Finally, at the end of the tour, you’ll discover why a woman once rode a donkey through the city while being whipped.
All this, and more, on the Mysteries and Histories of Mdina tour.

I booked this tour after catching Mario Cacciattolo’s content on social media. It was a great tour and he delivered it with the humour, enthusiasm and expertise you get to see in his videos. I took children aged 11 and 9 with me and they were completely immersed in the experience, never once complaining (which is quite an achievement.) Being a history buff I enjoyed Mario’s references to evidence linked to the stories he related. A great experience for both locals and visitors.

Having seen Dark Malta Tours reels on Facebook I knew it was going to be an enjoyable experience. Right from the start of the tour these expectations were not only met but exceeded. The guide (Mario) created a rich tapestry woven with historical facts, exceptional story telling skills, and humour. The tour lasted 2 hours and time was kept to the minute. So if you have plans afterwards do not worry, you will be on time. When making a booking just make sure you read the details as certain tours are specifically marketed as not being fit for children. Other than that this is a great way to spend an evening of vivid storytelling with a dark twist.

This was the best tour we ever went to. At first I was sceptical especially when you see the ridiculous price, but Mario, the tour guide, is terrific. He is a great storyteller and will keep you hooked till the end of the tour.

In the midst of Halloween’s wickedness, a group of daredevils gathered by the ancient walls of Mdina. Led by experienced guide and captivating storyteller Mario Cacciottolo, we set out on a nighttime journey through the dark and mysterious streets of the medieval city. Mario was very good. Very knowledgeable and you can tell he’s an ex-journalist as his command of English is very smooth and articulate . He describes the stories with easy words that flow. He’s also quite amusing. (Maybe he could leave a bit of time for people to ask questions). However, we really enjoyed it. It was great value for money and we would recommend it.
