Nizwa Souq
Exploring the Nizwa Souq is one of the top things to do in Oman. It is one of the oldest markets in the country and you will find fruit, meat, sweets, pottery, souvenirs and antiques... There is a lot to discover as you stroll through in the middle of the locals. Below is my guide to help you plan your visit.
Nizwa Fort Oman
The fort in Nizwa dates from the 17th century, during the Al Ya’rubi dynasty, and was built on top of the ruins of a 9th-century castle. The massive structure has been nicely restored, with many rooms set up to look as they did when the fort was in use; you'll see interesting historic tidbits offered in various displays in many rooms. Be sure to check out the prisoner room and read about the wartime use for the local dates, which were turned into a deadly weapon in the form of a cauldron of boiling date syrup. The views from the central tower are spectacular and worth the climb.

This was an amazing trip, from the moment our guide Mohammad Ali picked us up at our hotel. We were a total of 4 persons in a late model 4 x 4, and Mohammad spoke perfect English while explaining the history of Oman on the drive to Nizwa. From Nizwa we went to Jebel Akhdar where it was considerably cooler because of the altitude. Bring a puffer jacket in case you feel the cold. After a delicious lunch we headed back to Muscat arriving around dinner time. All in all, this was an amazing trip and many thanks to Mohammad Ali.

I had a great tour and the tourguide Mohammed Sulaiman was really good. Had a lot of knowledge about the places we visited. It was a small group which was great because we could make extra stops if there was something we were interested in. For example we stopped at a rose water factory which wasn’t on the program. So the guide was very accommodating. I recommend this tour for anyone.

Communication prior to tour was prompt and informative. Our guide Abdullah was very passionate about Oman and answered all our questions. We had enough time at all the sites and the restaurant he recommended was excellent. Abdullah was an excellent guide and was very considerate of our elderly parents who have mobility issues, We loved the tour it’s a long day but worth it .

This was an amazing trip with so many beautiful stops to see and explore! Our tour guide, Hussein, was so informative and knowledgeable. He did an excellent job explaining the history and tradition of Nizwa village and was so open to answering any questions we had regarding Oman and Omani culture. This was more than just a tour, it was an educational and immersive experience of Omani culture. It was probably my favourite experience in Oman and I would highly recommend it to anyone planning to visit.

I wasn’t very impressed with Jebel Akhdar. I read a lot of great comments but not sure we’ve been to the same place. Also the restaurant was the worst i have been in Oman. Didn’t even have freshly made bread. Nizwa and Birkat al Mouz were nice.
