What To Expect

Nizwa Souq

Exploring the Nizwa Souq is one of the top things to do in Oman. It is one of the oldest markets in the country and you will find fruit, meat, sweets, pottery, souvenirs and antiques... There is a lot to discover as you stroll through in the middle of the locals. Below is my guide to help you plan your visit.

Nizwa Fort Oman

The fort in Nizwa dates from the 17th century, during the Al Ya’rubi dynasty, and was built on top of the ruins of a 9th-century castle. The massive structure has been nicely restored, with many rooms set up to look as they did when the fort was in use; you'll see interesting historic tidbits offered in various displays in many rooms. Be sure to check out the prisoner room and read about the wartime use for the local dates, which were turned into a deadly weapon in the form of a cauldron of boiling date syrup. The views from the central tower are spectacular and worth the climb.

I was super happy Mohammed Aldighaishi as our guide to Nizwa, Bahla Fort and Jabreen Castle. He was very informative and enthusiastic about his work. It was a long day full of movement and information. The group was tired by the end of the day, but Mohammed showed no sign of tiredness - I really sympathise with him. He provided so many details about everything we saw and beyond, on the spot and on the road, all day long. Thank you so much Mohammed for your amazing work. I hope I get you as my guide with my next tour.

A wonderful way to see the old city. Abdullah was a great driver, friendly, knowledgeable and courteous. He was very attentive & went out of his way to answer any questions we had about the souq & Fort. The museum was stunning. I would highly recommend this tour.

Thoroughly disappointing experience, as I’d booked this hoping to see the UNESCO heritage site of Bahla Fort. The tour operator cancelled very last minute (the evening before the tour) due to the fact the group tour wasn’t full. This meant it was too late to book on another tour, as bookings had closed for the next day by that point. They then, somewhat laughably, offered me the option of a private tour for an additional $250, on top of the £60+ I had already paid. This is way above the private tour prices advertised through other agencies, and well above the prices I’d paid for the two private tours I did whilst in Oman, for arguably much more impressive sites. I’ve essentially lost a day of my trip as a result. Very poor service - better off booking a private tour with a more reputable agency who won’t cancel last minute then try to price gouge.

We did a private tour for 8 days and for that 8 days it was an amazing experience in Oman. No joke! Best service with my whole family. We are lucky to our tour guide Hamood! He is the best! He take care of us like a family! We are lucky to have him. He is so Knowledgeable and he will answer all your tour questions. I wish all the tour guide are like him. All the best!
