We pick you up in Tromsø and take you by minibus on a chase for the magical Northern lights. With the best local knowledge we will find the best area for the lights and good scenery for your pictures. To find a clear sky we will drive where we have to, even to Finland if needed. Our family ran company, Tromsø Friluftsenter, focus on small groups that gives the personal touch. Since 2004 we have given our guests adventures from our hearts. During the evening your guide will show you a movie and tell you information about the Northern lights, both the science and the folklore. We will also help you to adjust your camera settings for pictures of the northern lights, and take pictures of you with the lights for you to take home to show your family and friends. (Available for download in original size from our Flickr account). We may also visit our lavvu (our modern Sami shelter) and sit around the nice warm bonfire.(If we are within reasonable driving distance from our base camp). Occasionally the chance of a clear sky is low, and in that case we will advise you before the excursion starts to get your money refunded instead. We recommend to book more than one day during high season!

We had a wonderful time on our Northern Lights experience. The lights were giving a display even as we set out from Tromso, which meant we stopped at the base camp, rather than having to go further afield to chase the lights. Our guide Opal was lovely, helpful and informative. It was a cold night and we were glad of the tent with a fire, where hot drinks and chocolate cake were available. It was a very memorable evening and I would definitely recommend this company.

Experience report: After 3 days of trying to “hunt” the Northern Lights on our own, we booked the tour on our last evening – the best decision ever. The family business has 40 years of experience (it was one of the first four tour operators ever in Tromsø), but above all the right flair and passion that is infectious. From the very beginning, Trine took us with her warm nature and exciting stories into her special world of Northern Lights hunting. The booking was straightforward and compared to other providers the price is really fair. We were picked up at the port and delivered directly to our hotel after the tour. Trine chose her family's farm as her spot... and it soon became clear: this is the right place. While the sky was cloudy around it, there was clear visibility and Trine urged patience. Initially the Northern Lights were seen very faintly – and finally in their full glory. Tip at this point: dress warm (!) You stand outside for a long time and initially underestimate that in relatively mild temperatures. However, thermal suits are also offered and we were allowed to warm up in a tepee. Trine was also the perfect support when it came to photos. You could borrow tripods, there was an introduction to the correct setting on the phone and she took pictures with her professional camera that you could download later. A great memory. The most beautiful moment for us, of course, was when the lights started dancing in the sky – and we realized that this is not only a magical moment for us, but also for Trine, who has already experienced this natural phenomenon countless times. Afterwards, the teepee had cocoa, coffee, tea, cake and marshmallows by the fire. Trine has told exciting stories and we as a group talked about our holiday experiences. A heartfelt THANK YOU at this point for this magical experience. Trine, you're doing a great job.

The evening was just beautiful and a very special experience. Luckily we had clear skies and experienced great aurora borealis. Our guide Opal was super sweet, very warm and accompanied the trip perfectly. You can feel her love for nature, her homeland and the Northern Lights and this enthusiasm is infectious. The physical well-being was also taken care of: There were delicious chocolate cakes and hot drinks, which made the evening even cozier. It was especially nice that Opal took many great photos of us, so we can keep wonderful memories of this trip. Overall, it was an all-round successful excursion, which we can absolutely recommend.

I can’t thank Trine from Tromsø Friluftsenter enough. Unfortunately, due to bad weather we weren’t able to experience the Northern Lights on our original tour, and we couldn’t make the alternative date they offered. Trine went above and beyond by personally rebooking us with a different provider so we didn’t miss out altogether. Truly exceptional customer service and very much appreciated.

It was a magical experience. The guide, unfortunately I do not know his name, made the experience even more unique. He guided us for three hours to discover the northern lights showing us and getting excited with us at the sight of the auroras. Welcoming, familiar and authentic.

We could not recommend this company more, we had a fantastic guide (Opal) who was clearly very proud and enthusiastic to share the little slice of heaven that is Tromso. On the journey we had a guided tour, and a little informational video about the mythos behind the northern lights. Once we arrived at their bespoke base camp (one of the very few company's that have one, massive benefit being able to duck in and out of a heated building, instead of freezing by the roadside in a coach), we were given cake, and hot drinks. Once we were all set up with the supplied phone mounts we headed outside to the completely dark sky and immediately we could see the Northen lights! Opal tooks some photos for us with their dslr (free of charge). And would always run inside full of glee whenever the lights peaked, so we never missed out on a big show. 10/10 higher if I could, choose this smaller more intimate tour, rather then a big tour.

Great tour to the Northern Lights near Tromsø. Our guide Opal was very dedicated to providing an unforgettable experience for all participants. The journey was shortened by information on the formation of the Northern Lights. On site, Opal helped each individual participant set up the cameras or mobiles. There were also sufficient tripods, without which no good shots succeed. By the way, there was a small fire to warm up, hot drinks and chocolate cake. Overall a great experience, to which the very friendly and motivated tour guide has contributed to a great extent. Would always recommend and gladly book again.

I want to thank Opal so much for a wonderful tour. We went on a night where the weather said 100% cloud cover & lots of people said it would be impossible to see the lights, however Opal took us to a beautiful spot and the lights we saw were incredible. She is very knowledgable, provides great cake and took some beautiful pictures. Cannot recommend enough.
