The Ketchikan Photo Safari is a fun, small group 3 hour shore excursion designed for short time travelers who want great photos, engaging history, and a deeper understanding of Alaska.
Traveling with a professional photography guide in a group of just 2–9 guests, you’ll explore Ketchikan’s most scenic and culturally significant locations, including a visit to Potlatch Park. Here, you’ll learn about Southeast Alaska Native culture, traditional totem poles, carving, symbolism, and the stories that connect the land and its people.
While photography is a key part of the experience, you don’t need to be photography focused to enjoy this tour. It’s also perfect for guests who are new to Alaska and want to hear great stories, learn local history, and better understand what they’re seeing. Along the way, your guide shares easy photography tips you can use with any camera or smartphone—tips many guests say improve their photos for the rest of their cruise.

This is an easy walk I wouldn’t call it a hike so don’t be discouraged by your fitness level. We didn’t get to see much wildlife because it rained the entire time and was early in the season. Our Guides (Josh and Saint) did a great job teaching us about how to get interesting outdoor photos and helped us embrace the rain using it to our advantage to get great photos. They were knowledgeable about the area, the history and culture which was super interesting. It’s a tour I would recommend even if you are just taking photos with a cellphone.

We've been on photo tours before but this trip was so much more. Brock and Sant provided not only some worthwhile photo tips but a wealth of information about the history of Ketchikan and the indigenous tribes. Brock is a fountain of knowledge and stories. We could not have asked for a better experience.

We booked through TripAdvisor to do the Ketchikan photo safari. What a service!! I had to call the contact nummer on the reservation and with in short time I was called back! Even on the day of the trip I was called to make sure we were going. We were in Ketchikan on a NCL cruise and not docking in the city. We were kindly picked up by Gatlin , Saint and Envie ( last two per learning for the summer season) I was traveling with a senior person and they were very patient with us, always checking with us if we were fine. It happened we had a private tour because they other guests did not show up. They really missed out!! All had a lot of knowledge! If I could give 10 stars , they would have 10 stars . What a service and excellent communications!!!

You must ask for Brock if your going to book this experience

Out of the numerous options that were available in Ketchikan via Viator, the uniqueness and personal perspective photo tour resonated to me. I’m a trained photographer, so much of the explanations were useful, but I appreciated the new options and techniques while using my iPhone; Brock was able to explain vantage points and different angles to take pictures one might not think of, which added to the enjoyment. Once taking pictures. I was learning some of the regional history of both Indigenous peoples and the peoples who moved into the area over the last couple hundred years; I even learned about Annie, the first black property owner knows Alaska; and we got to spend quite a bit of time at the conclusion of the tour at the Potlatch Totem Park! as we were the first cruise of the season, I was solo on the tour, but they can have up to nine people which honestly would probably be a very busy and noisy to work. I could see many people with little photography knowledge enjoying this, but actively inquisiting as to how to view different things. Great thing about the tour is that you can come in from any knowledge point and find it beneficial; so I had to enjoy a tour on my own while Brock was training Sam, and with Victoria coming along as well. All three offered fun, perceptive and personal history which player fun in the great who a phenomenal tour. I have a short stuff over in two weeks and I’m thinking about doing again because will be different each tournament with kids their own and uniqueness. Highly recommended🤩😎

Angela Ledyard was a very good guide and aware of the pics I wanted. She asked me what shots I might want near the beginning of the tour. Having returned to the harbour and almost given up hope of shooting an eagle in flight, she noticed what I hadn't, grabbed the coffee cup from me, allowing me to get the following shots. Full marks to Angela. (The Green Bean coffee was excellent by the way)
