Natural Coral Dyes
Hands-on Experience
You can take your coral dyeing work home with you on the day of your experience.
Shuri Ryuzen is the only place in Okinawa where you can experience coral dyeing. Shuri Ryuzen is a gassho-style workshop with a triangular roof. Making full use of the roof space, huge loom-like workbenches are lined up inside the house, and artworks of the Ryukyu Dynasty are displayed. You can feel the history and culture of the ancient capital Shuri in the museum. Coral has been a source of happiness in Okinawa since ancient times, and Shuri Ryuzen creates unique works from coral fossils.
Upon arrival, participants can expect to be greeted by knowledgeable instructors who will guide them through the intricate process step by step. Learn about the history and significance of coral dyeing in Okinawan culture as you explore the techniques and materials involved. From selecting vibrant pigments to applying them onto fabric using traditional methods, every moment is a hands-on learning experience rich in cultural heritage. Whether you're a novice or seasoned artisan, the Okinawa Shuri Ryusen Coral Dyeing Experience promises to ignite your creativity and leave you with a newfound appreciation for this ancient art form. As you immerse yourself in the dyeing process, witness the stunning transformation of plain fabric into a masterpiece of color and texture, reflecting the beauty of Okinawa's natural surroundings. With each brushstroke and swirl, participants can create their own unique piece of artwork to take home as a cherished memento of their time spent in Okinawa.
