What To Expect

Volcanoes National Park

Entering dense stands of bamboo interspersed with open glades; you will make your way deep into golden monkey territory. Guides lead visitors to the habitat of groups of ‘habituated’ golden monkeys – monkeys that have become accustomed to human presence. Though viewing is kept to a maximum of one hour, travellers can get an up-close look at the golden monkey in its natural habitat. Adult monkeys frolic in plain view, feeding on bamboo leaves and leaping from perch to perch. Females carry their young, completely comfortable among onlookers. Later visit a Cultural centre where you'll join the local brew makers to understand the chemistry about the process of brewing a local beer from bananas fruits. If you find the activity interesting enough you can join the women in squeezing the juice out of the bananas and drink a glass of juice (Optional). Understand how long juice takes to turn into alcohol after adding in sorghum floor. Enjoy the big glass of our local brew. Among other activities they also do basket weaving and with your visit this local community will be proud of this activity and families supported financially

The tour is fantastic. The whole experience works great. The drive up north to the park is worth it in its own right, the monkey tracking is amazing, and the cultural village good fun. The whole tour is well organized, great car and service, and a lovely place for lunch too.

This company really goes above and beyond. I came wearing the wrong clothes but they were so helpful and accomodating. Excellent tour.

If you are keen on photographing animals this is the trip for you especially if you are not going to stay in Volcanoes NP. The Golden monkeys are wonderful and there were so many that everyone (you join a tracking group) got excellent opportunities for great photos. It does entail an early start but well worth it. Zidane, the driver, is a lovely young man, a good driver and a great companion. The lunch was the best I had had in Uganda and Rwanda! Don’t forget to buy your Golden Monkey permit well in advance!

Their One Day Golden Monkey & Cultural Tour is touted as a private tour on Viator's website but really it's a private driver taking you to Volcanoes National Park and to a place where one can walk around and learn about the cultural activities. The Golden Monkey part of this trip was very good as it you were guided into the forest where the trackers knew the monkeys to be then given an hour to be around them (very close) taking pictures as they moved around you. We lucked out in that we were with a family of 100+ monkeys. However, it is NOT a private tour as listed on Viator's website, because you will be paired with others there for the Golden Monkey experience. Kawira Safaris reached out ahead of time and we wired funds (fees at our expense) to pre-purchase our permits so that we would not be shut out. HOWEVER, they did not mention ANYTHING about the needed for a PCR Covid test in order to do the monkey portion of the tour. This is a requirement of the park and we should have been notified that we needed this done. Instead we unexpectedly had to wait around 2hours while we got tested at the park and then another 1.5hours while they re-ran the tests since the batch they had put our specimens with had a positive result, so they needed to test everyone individually. Thankfully the positive person was not in our group of 3, but we ended up being paired with two men who were traveling with the person who tested positive! Because we lost so much time due to this unexpected testing, we decided to forgo the cultural tour portion of our trip to return to Kigali. So, even without this cultural part, our 10hr tour was 12+ hours due to the unexpected delay. Kawira Safaris would not accept any responsibility for our issues and offer any partial refund to offset the extra expense we incurred or to make up for the lousy experience we had at their lack of communication of this pertinent information. TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE of this outfit. I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THEIR SERVICES.

Do this tour prior to Gorillas. If we hadn’t seen the gorillas it would have been fun and interesting I’ve seen better wild monkeys in Gibraltar and Mexico though.
