We come to Perth every year and usually do this cruise. Originally, we took the return trip from Perth to Freo and back, now we usually just go one-way, alternating direction each year. If you’ve never been to Perth before and want to get an idea of the city’s layout from the CBD down to Freo, then this is essential sightseeing. Except there’s not much to see - this is definitely not Sydney Harbour! Midway in the journey, the Swan River is so wide it’s almost like a sea – and you’re sailing through the middle of it, with the riverbanks either side in the far distance. Perth is, of course, largely flat from the CBD to the coast, so there’s no spectacular backdrop either. The most interesting things are at either end: great views of the CBD with its impressive skyscrapers at the city end and, as you head towards Freo, you can ogle at the extravagant properties belonging to Perth’s super-rich overlooking the river at Dalkeith and Peppermint Grove. And finally, there's Fremantle Port itself. There’s also a chance of wildlife spotting. There are always plenty of cormorants and terns to see, pelicans quite often and, if you’re really lucky, a pod of bottlenose dolphins swimming energetically beside the vessel – this has happened to us on a couple of occasions in recent years. Capable windsurfers might shoot by too. A major issue is the boat itself. For a cruise that purports to offer sightseeing of Perth’s Swan River, it lacks a top viewing deck where you can stroll around to enjoy 360˚ views. Instead, most passengers sit inside beside windows though there is some outside viewing from a small open area at the stern – but looking at where you’ve just been, not where you’re going. I think this trip is a “must-do” - but don’t come with high expectations!

Comfortable boat, excellent skipper’s commentary. On time. Friendly staff. Left Fremantle harbour to see the racing yachts .

This was great way to see Perth from a different angle. The only negative is that where we were seated (top deck on the outside) the speaker system was not working well. We missed most of what was being said, the audio kept breaking away all the time.

We traveled one way from Perth to Fremantle on a beautiful sunny December day. The trip was lovely, a real pleasure to be able to sit outside, relax and enjoy the views and waves on the way. Really good experience, the boat is excellent (clean, tidy, loads of seating) and the staff were all very helpful and friendly. Would use again, a great tour alternative to the train.

A lovely way to get to Freemantle. We had enough time to see the main 2 things we wanted to and have a quick browse through market.

I found the 1 hour 15 minutes journey uncomfortable with poor cheap seating. Sometimes some customers like to sit in silence and enjoy the scenery in peace and quiet not having to listen to shallow pointless talk.

We did the Perth to Freemantle return trip and was very worthwhile. The cabin is very spacious and comfortable and there are two levels. The windows are large and clean, in fact we saw them cleaniing them all prior to departure. The commentary was good and quite clear. The bottom level is wheelchair accessible. You can buy coffee and snacks on board.
