Step into the breathtaking landscapes of Guatemala’s Ring of Fire, a country blessed with more than 37 volcanoes, each with its own beauty and character. Among them, Pacaya Volcano is one of the most welcoming and accessible to visitors. Known for its gentle slopes, fascinating lava rock formations, and spectacular views, Pacaya offers an unforgettable hiking experience that’s suitable for all adventure levels. Although it is a living volcano, its activity is of the Strombolian and occasionally Plinian, carefully monitored, making it a safe and unique way to experience Guatemala’s volcanic wonders up close.
Rising to about 8,000 feet above sea level, Pacaya is an ideal destination for travelers seeking an easy to moderate ascent with epic panoramic views.
Along the way, we’ll pause at steam vents and hot old lava pockets where you can roast marshmallows, a tradition that’s as fun as it is unique. At the top, we’ll prepare a special picnic for you

It will take us about 1.5 hours drive from Casa Mandarina in Antigua Guatemala to reach the Visitor Center in San Vicente Pacaya, where our adventure begins
San Vicente Pacaya
We'll start our hike at approximately 1,900 meters (6,300 feet) above sea level. The trail has some steep sections, but we'll take it at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops to rest, enjoy the scenery, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Depending on your pace, the ascent may take 1.5 to 2.5 hours, remember there's no rush, it's not a race! The effort will be well worth it when we reach the closest point to the crater.

It was a beautiful, clear day for a hike to the Pacaya Volcano. We met our driver, Felix, early in the morning and had some great conversations as he drove us to the starting point. Once we were ready to start our climb, our guide, Uber, took over. The hike is steadily uphill and the trail is shared with horses and dogs. And even snakes! We were a bit startled but our guide and the other locals laughed it off as a "pet." Hmmm. Lots of nice views and places to pull off and rest on the way up and the top is a huge lava field. The promise is toasted marshmallows, but the heated lava holes barely warmed ours. No matter - Uber's wife made us a delicious lunch so no marshmallows needed. The office staffers at Columbus Guatemala Travel were delightful to work with. Friendly and responsive to questions and emails. Great day trip out of Antigua.
