Our group meets at Old Town Outfitters Shop in Antigua at 14:00hrs – where drinking water, bathroom facilities and retail outdoor equipment are available for hikers. Our drive to the trailhead is just over 1-hour in private transport from Antigua to the Park Office. As our group moves up one of the myriad of trails on the mountain, your Old Town guide will direct the group toward active surface or sub-surface lava flows near the summit. He will then decide where to make camp for the evening, and arrange the group’s campsite close to one of Pacaya’s many beautiful vistas. A freshly prepared dinner will be readied for the group. Hot coffee and tea will keep your group warm after sundown, and after a good night’s rest in tents and bags views of surrounding highland volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango will greet campers at first light. After breakfast our group will break camp and have a relaxed descent of Pacaya’s slopes as we move down to the trailhead.

We had the best guides (Jerry and Ronaldo) for our overnight stay on Acetenango. Fuego had just just erupted so we couldn't do that hike but the morning hike to the summit of Acetenango although exhausting was incredible. I would want to get myself in better shape and do something similar again for sure!

This is an excellent, smaller group tour to stay overnight on Acatenango, with Fuego visible from your tent. Great food, excellent guides & porters and a fantastic camping location. Our group naturally broke into 2 smaller groups - a faster one & slower - & each group had an excellent guide which made it safe, inclusive & enjoyable. We saw larger groups with a smaller ratio of guides & we saw someone get altitude sickness without her guide in sight. Also people turning around & not making it up to the top - our guides were always nearby & on the lookout for signs of fatigue or altitude sickness. Our guide, Vini, was entertaining & knowledgeable, with lots of positive energy & great photography skills. A highly recommended tour.

We travelled up in 4x4s which was hilarious. Your guides are talented drivers! This was my best experience in Guatemala. My brother was taken ill an hour from camp. Our guides, Abner and Uriel stayed with him whilst another guide, Diego came to let me know and asked me about medication. This promoted me to ask others in our group to ask around camp for an inhaler and Diego allowed me to join him and bring a sleeping back down to my brother. I lit the way home for the rescue party, keeping their spirits high and slowly returning my brother safely to base camp, where an inhaler was waiting for him. We were touched by everyone's kindness, which made our adventure even more special. I stayed outside all night, mesmerised by the changing sky, the firey volcano and shooting stars, and feeling that I was with the greatest humans in the world. Trail shoes will help you grip the slippery gravel, and layer up for the night time temperature drop. Enjoy friendships with everyone in your group and listen to how they see things. A child in our group said 'nature is a gift'. Thank you Urban Outfitters for giving us the opportunity to share the beauty of nature and kindness with each other! The food was great too!

I was so excited for this tour. Unfortunately, we were unable to get to Pacaya due to the manifestaciones (demonstrations). I had been in contact with Eduardo at Old Town Outfitters all week who assured me trips would be going despite the road closures and they had gotten through all week. The morning of our trip, others at our Spanish School tried to get to Pacaya and could not due to the road closures. I told Eduardo that I'd like to cancel and get a refund but he assured me that they would be able to get through. Sure enough, we drove for an hour and were stopped in a dreadful traffic jam for miles due to the closures. Our guide told us that we would have to walk about 5k through the traffic jam and demonstration to reach another driver to take us to the next leg of the trip. Our guide and our driver were great but I was told that we would have to walk an additional 5k along the highway past the demonstrations before we could reach the other driver. I chose the Pacaya trip (not Acatenango) because I am only capable of doing shorter walks at this time due to surgical recovery from breast cancer. Additionally, our American Embassy had told us that Americans should not approach the demonstrations under any circumstances. I felt incredibly unsafe walking along a busy highway for 5k toward a demonstration and without enough water for those additional miles. I told our driver to drive us back home again, deeply disappointed. I tipped our driver and guide, as none of this was their fault and I didn't want to short them the income. We requested half of our payment returned. I understand that there were circumstances beyond their control but we should have communicated these additional miles of walking in advance. I am still waiting to hear about my refund more than a month and a half later... I would not recommend booking in advance with this company!

This was an enjoyable trip, with all the camping gear transported for us (on a mountain horse) and set up for the overnight stay. Andres was an engaging, knowledgeable, friendly guide — and an excellent cook who made a tasty dinner and breakfast for us, in addition to guiding us around the volcano. One recommendation though: check the weather. We were able to see tremendous views until just before sunset and just after sunrise, but cloud cover took over in the intervening hours and we couldn’t see much.

We did the overnight tour to Acatenango and our amazing guide Vinny gave us the best trip we could have asked for. Hurricane Julia caused the weather to be rainy and very windy all night and he still made the best of it for us. And the best hot chocolate! We will definitely be doing the hike again and hope to get Vinny again!

This was an incredible experience. Our guides, Diego and David, we incredibly knowledgable and understanding of the needs of the group. Although, this excursion was physically difficult, I felt completely supported and safe. The views were AMAZING and like nothing I've ever seen before. Seeing a volcano erupting is insane. I definitely recommend. Please bring warm clothes. The night was VERY COLD!

My husband, three friends, and I thoroughly enjoyed our overnight hike of Pacaya! The hike is harder than we anticipated, though we all got through it. It's just hard to constantly be going uphill, but if you just pace yourself and stop whenever you need to, you'll make it through! (Also remember that it's harder to breathe at higher elevation, but the guides are used to it, so it's easy for them. But they'll wait for you!) I'd also recommend taking altitude medicine ahead of time if you're not used to that elevation. I wouldn't recommend doing the hike during rainy season like we did, because we didn't get any of the amazing views that other people get, just fog. So that part was disappointing, but that's nothing the tour guides can change! Note that you should supply your own hiking sticks and camping headlights (if you want them, and I do suggest them). We paid for a horse to carry the camping gear up and back, and I think that was worth it. That way we only had to carry our personal items. One of our friends is a frequent hiker, so he prepared us well. We all brought water, toilet paper, a change of dry/warm clothes for camping, sani wipes, etc. (Pro tip: a funnel for women is a great asset!) There are outdoor toilets (without doors, so just take turns/have someone keep watch!). They don't flush and they're not to sit on, they're just made of concrete, but they beat having to dig a hole in the ground! But again, bring your own TP, and plastic bags for trashing it all later. We fit 3 people in one tent comfortably, but the sleeping mats under the sleeping bags were pretty thin/not particularly comfortable. So if you're regular camper and have your own sleeping pad, I suggest bringing it. But we weren't expecting the Ritz, so it wasn't a big deal. Camping is camping! There were tons of stray dogs at camp, but they were all super well behaved. We gave them our scraps of food, lol. The dinner and breakfast that our guide made were AMAZING, so five stars for that alone! The coolest part was roasting marshmallows over the lava vents (we didn't see actual lava, but being over in that part of the volcano felt like being on another planet, which was pretty cool). We would definitely like to do the hike/camping experience again during dry season when we can see the phenomenal views! Many thanks to Old Town Outfitters for a great time. Mimi made the whole booking process very easy.

  • Unsafe guides who are unfit

The tour was very poorly and unsafely executed. Our group consisted of myself, my girlfriend, another random person, 3 porters and a guide. The safety issues began with the guide not properly equipping us for the hike. Although he felt he deserved two hiking poles for himself, each of us only received one pole. The pole the random person in our trip received was broken and could not be extended. I gave him my pole because he was already have a lot of difficulty with the hike because he was told his tennis shoes would be fine to hike in. They were not. So I had to buy some walking sticks along the way from a random local. Our guide going up was too out of shape to keep up with our group. We left him behind and went with our porter to base camp so we really didn't see our guide the first day for almost the entire hike until we got to base camp. When we got to camp, the guide, seemingly worried about his fitness for the remainder of the hike, tried to convince us that it is not worth going to the top of the mountain because it might be cloudy. We affirmed we wanted to go to the top, so he said the porter would take us up so that he could stay back so 'breakfast would be ready' when we got back down and so we could beat the rush of people back to the bottom. I can't emphasize enough that our guide did not guide us to the summit. The porter took us up to the summit the next morning. When we got back down to the bottom, the guide hadn't even started breakfast (a bit mind blowing because it was yogurt, strawberry and granola), not had he packed up anything to prepare to leave. On the way back down, our guide was apparently a brand new man. He left our group routinely for periods longer than 15 minutes at a time. He was able to get down so fast because my girlfriend and the other person in our group were really struggling on the steep decline on the way down. The guide even said the night before that most injuries occur on the way down. Yet, our guide left us all except to wait for us every 15 or so minutes and then leave us behind again. I had to help the other two people in our tour get down the mountain. Our guide was unfit and unsafe. I give my two stars for el fuego itself. You get the same view regardless of who you go with, but I would go with another group where the guides are fit, they equip their hikers, and they assist hikers who are struggling.
