Wonderful half day that should have been whole day. High winds intervened, no fault of our lovely guides who made us feel and be safe, keeping us well informed throughout. Chemi, I won’t forget you!

Despite the weather which was wet and windy I had a fantastic experience. I cannot recommend Adrift highly enough. They made sure you had all the correct gear for the hike and if not leant you appropriate clothing. Our guides were both terrific but Kamy was just amazing. There was nothing he didn't know about the trail and how to keep safe whatever the conditions. He took such good care of us. I learnt so much and just wish I lived closer so I could come back when it was sunny and I got the views as well. Thank you Adrift

  • Great walk but should we have done it?

This is an amazing hike with challenging terrain near the summit. The weather was as predicted; high winds, cloudy with heavy afternoon rain. Every other operator cancelled but Adrift seem to pride themselves on not being defeated by the elements. We were advised not to use waterproof trousers which was a mistake. Our guide’s expertise got us through a very wet and windy walk. In those conditions it was for hardened hikers only - not for holidaymakers seeking a good walk with great views. If the forecast is dodgy decide which category you fall into would be my advice. Ultimately we were glad we did it, but remain unsure as to whether it should have taken place.

  • Tongariro Crossing - cold, wet.

This crossing should really probably not have been attempted in the weather we experienced. There were no other groups on the climb yesterday and all shuttles were cancelled. We had rain and low cloud all day. And very high winds at the top. The conditions were clearly on the edge of safety acceptability - but not by much. We had to rush the trail to get lower before the torrential rain started. The staff at the Adrift shop did not recommend we took waterproof trousers saying our walking trousers would dry after any rain. That’s true - if it stops raining, which it never did. We were soaking and cold. I feel there was a business need to get us up to avoid refunds. Having said that the guide had a great deal of experience and expertise which was required to get us all off the mountain safely.

  • Good but fast crossing.

Good crossing with experienced guide. Fast pace as they want you to finish the 20KM in 7-8 Hours. That means less time to enjoy the view and take pictures. If you are coming from Europe (Austria) and have experience in those conditions, you can also take the walk by yourself as the path is well marked. Make sure to have good weather and at least 3 L of water.

  • What a Trek but so Worth It!

Fantastic experience from the moment we were picked up at our hotel until we were dropped off 11 hours later. The staff were professional, friendly and fun to be with for the day. A packed lunch was included in the package and we could not have prepared anything better - the veggie wrap was excellent. Our tour guides Kenny and Luke explained how the hike would go, the pace we would take (and why) and explained the geological and cultural aspects of the crossing. As for the crossing - you can’t describe it so you will just have to do it yourself. Be prepared for a long hike that is physically demanding. It starts off easily but quickly becomes a steep uphill climb then even more difficult decent. If you’re thinking about doing this, be prepared for an exhilarating extended workout but it is so worth the effort. We thoroughly enjoyed doing the crossing. We met people from all over the world, trekked through a surreal landscape and had a great time. We highly recommend Adrift Tongariro.

  • On top of the world...

A wonderful day with two excellent guides. The volcanic terrain was like nothing we had seen before- stunning in its majesty and immensity. The colours were surprising- with the reds and browns of the rocks contrasting with the vivid blue lake water and blue skies. The steam vents and the sulphur smelladded to the surreal landscape. Quite a physical challenge - particularly the long downhill at the end but the whole party made it and we were a disparate group in terms of age. Well worth the time moey and effort!

Described as moderately hard - be in no doubt this is a hard walk. Some spectacular scenes. The guides made sure you were safe and were encouraging. Could have given more info particularly to those who weren't at the front of the line. Lunch was too dry probably because I mainly wanted water! I'm proud I finished this walk but I wouldn't do it again. The Adrift company/team/guides were great
