The golden monkey trekking tour in Volcanoes NP is one of the top adventures to do in Rwanda. The activity involves a relatively easy trek through the bamboo jungles in the lower zones of the Virunga Volcanoes to find and spend an hour with the striking Golden Monkeys. Afterwards head to misty Bwindi, which is home to more than half the population of the remaining 720 Mountain Gorillas. Bwindi offers a unique birding opportunity, cultural experiences, and the elusive primates.
Bwindi NP most notable for being home of over 400 of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorilla population, estimate of 880 mountain gorilla population, which has been under protection since 1964, there is about 310 species of butterfly, 51 species of reptiles, 200 types of trees, 88 species of moths and an exceptional 120 types of mammals including 10 primates. The latter includes chimpanzee, L'Hoest's, red tailed and blue monkey, black and white colobus, baboon.

You will be met by our driver guide in Kigali 05:am and we transfer to the park head offices in Kinigi by 7.00am. Join up with the other Golden Monkeys trekkers, meet the ranger guide for a few minutes talk about the activity and the park, and by 8.00am you transfer to the trail head just outside the park. Enjoy great views of the mountain scenery as you start your trek into the park to find the golden monkeys. The golden monkeys live near the edge of the park in the bamboo forests where the ground is relatively flat and easy to trek. Find the monkeys and follow them as they feed, notice how they skillfully pick the young bamboo leaves from the tip of the bamboo tree. They may also move out of the park into the potato fields and how they love the potatoes! After an amazing one hour with the golden monkeys you will return to the trail head drive back to the lodge for lunch and thereafter head to the border, after clearing we will proceed to Bwindi. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
You will have an early morning breakfast and move to the Park headquarters to join other trackers in a briefing about the gorilla trekking rules at 7:45 am. You will trek through thick creepers and undergrowth with your guides to find the Gorillas, which can take you 1-8 hours. The steeply forested landscape is incredibly dense but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails allowing access by tourists. You will have one hour to stay with the Gorillas once sited and afterwards transfer back to Kigali Airport with lunch en-routes to catch your evening departure flight back home.

5.00We had an excellent experience during our Mid-range 2-day golden monkeys & gorilla trekking experience. Our guide, Ronald, was extremely kind and knowledgeable. He went above and beyond to make sure the trip was according to our wishes; taking the time to advise the park rangers of our ideal hiking plan. The company organized our stay at the Gorilla Hills Eco Lodge, which was perfect. The food was delicious, the room was spacious and the lodge staff were extremely friendly; even taking the time to clean and dry our shoes from the golden monkeys trekking. I highly recommend Frena Adventures and we thoroughly enjoyed!

5.00I had a 2 day itinerary from Kigali to both the Volcanoes National Park and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Ronnie was my driver and the car was very comfortable (this is important for me as I can get travel sick otherwise). The tour was nicely paced. Seeing the golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park was great but the real highlight was Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: trekking families of gorillas was amazing! I went for the midrange itinerary and the lodge I stayed in had absolutely beautiful views over the mountains.

5.00My wife and I had a fantastic time on our honeymoon with Frena Adventures! We did a 2 day trek in Rwanda and Uganda, and our guide Farouk was amazing! He was perfect and we were so lucky to have him as our guide! It was a wonderful way to kick off the honeymoon. Farouk was very knowledgeable, made us feel so comfortable, and was a fantastic driver!

5.00Highly recommend Frena tours. We did the three day tour including the Bwindi Gorilla trek and Golden monkeys hike at Volcanos National park. Everything was exceptional! Ronald was our guide and took exceptional care of us throughout our trip. I had recently had a car accident so was really nervous about my hiking capacity but Ronald organised everything to ensure I could still do everything I wanted to. The gorilla hiking in Uganda was exceptional and cannot rate the guides and porters enough. Similarly, our experiences in Rwanda were amazing - exceptional staff and facilities all round. We did the budget accomodation option which was really good value for money and still such a personal and comfortable experience. We also really loved that Frena was a local company and all the tours we took supported local businesses and staff. My only regret was not doing a longer trip and spending more time in both Rwanda and Uganda. FYI Frena allows you to plan your own adventure - which I would definitely do in the future. 5.00Very well done- Fred helped me book a private gorilla trek experience on very short notice, and he patiently answered all my questions via message. I didn’t want to leave Uganda without seeing the gorillas so I’m glad Frena Adventures was able to help make this happen! Jackson was my guide and driver- he seemed to know everything about the gorillas and Uganda. He also knew some great spots for authentic food! I was lucky enough to spend an hour with 11 mountain gorillas and I can say this experience was well worth it.

5.00Unforgettable 2-day Golden Monkey (Volcanoes NP) and Gorilla Trekking (Bwindi) Tour. The booking process was simple and all my questions were answered quickly. Payment process was exceptionally good, as the payment provider even allowed transferring the downpayment via PayPal and the remaining balance could be payed in Euro. Contact with the guide/ driver was initiated the evening before the tour - which seemed a bit close to the start but worked out fine. My guide/ driver (Farouk) is very experienced, considerate and an excellent driver - even in the challenging road conditions during raining season. I highly suggest this company, tour and guide.
