The Great Mosque of Kairouan
The Great Mosque is the symbol of Kairouan. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques in the world, one of the most impressive monuments in all of the Maghreb! Its religious prestige makes Kairouan the 4th holiest city in Islam. We admire its imposing minaret, its majestic courtyard of impressive dimensions, surrounded by superbly designed arcades and housing a sundial, and the tall, richly carved cedar wood doors. They open onto the prayer rooms, decorated with dozens of marble columns. Built in 670, this architectural masterpiece, whose appearance evokes an adobe fortress, inspired other mosques in the Maghreb.
Medina of Kairouan
The Kairouan medina is one of the most preserved and authentic in Tunisia, where you can take a look in the souks, taste Kairouan's pastries "Les Mekroudhs" and its artisanal carpet manufacturing.

Excellent day out for the two of us and Didon Tours provided a very friendly driver and guide for our trip from Hammamet. It was a long day but fascinating, with the El Jem coliseum the clear highlight due to the absolutely massive scale of the structure still remaining. Our guide provided excellent background information and we explored everywhere available. The other two visits to Kairouan and Monastir were very informative as well. All in all places that everyone should visit.

Excellent tour! Highly recommended! Three sites of great interest are visited. Beautiful panoramas. We chose guide in French. Both driver and guide very friendly and professional. Extensive knowledge of history and excellent predisposition to answer and clarify questions and doubts. A day to remember.

Really informative guide who was very knowledgeable and didnt make us feel rushed. Worth the drive and so much nicer to have a driver than have to drive ourselves. El Jem is spectacular and Kirouan and the fort at Monastir also worth seeing. Much better than the larger coach trip we did to another site.

This private tour to Kairouan and El Jem was an enjoyable experience with many highlights and just a few areas for improvement. Our guide was friendly, spoke excellent English, and had a good general knowledge of the sites we visited. The driver was excellent — polite, professional, and most importantly, safe on the road, which was reassuring given the amount of driving involved. While it was a long day with a lot of time spent in the car, the stunning historical sights made it well worth it. Visiting the mosque of Kairouan was one of the standout moments of the tour — it's a truly beautiful and culturally rich location. The walk through the older parts of Kairouan was also lovely and atmospheric, though we were a bit disappointed not to visit the medina as advertised. El Jem was another highlight; the amphitheatre is magnificent and not to be missed. The gift shop at El Jem was a pleasant surprise — it was well-stocked with reasonably priced souvenirs and, unlike many tourist shops, there were no pushy salespeople. All entry fees were included as part of the tour, which helped everything run smoothly. While lunch wasn’t included, the guide ensured we had an opportunity to stop and eat, which we appreciated. It was also nice to have the comfort and flexibility of a private driver and guide throughout the day. Both were respectful and kept our personal items safe in the car. We were also picked up on time from our hotel, which set a positive tone for the day. There were, however, a few small drawbacks. Although the vehicle was advertised as air-conditioned, we had to ask for the air conditioning to be switched on, which was a bit inconvenient on a warm day. There was also a moment of confusion at the end of the tour when the guide didn’t inform the driver he would be making his own way home, which caused a slight delay. Additionally, while the guide was knowledgeable, the level of historical depth was fairly light. If you're looking for an in-depth historical tour with rich context at every stop, this may not fully meet those expectations. A few tips for future travelers: make sure to bring water, as you'll be in the car for long stretches and walking quite a bit at each site. For women visiting the mosque in Kairouan, it’s advisable to bring a headscarf, both out of respect and in accordance with local customs. Overall, this tour offered a great way to see some of Tunisia’s most impressive historical landmarks in comfort. A bit more detail and communication would have made it even better, but it was still a rewarding and enjoyable day.
