What To Expect

This is a unique opportunity to visit the home of a local and explore traditional culture and cuisine. Geraldine lives in a well-lit, simple apartment in Agbogba, the suburbs of Accra. She is an expert on making many types of Ghanaian dishes. She cooks most of the local dishes in the traditional way, just like how her grandmother taught her! She also learned to cook international meals by watching cooking shows on cable TV. Ghanaian's enjoy a rather simple, but flavorful cuisine. Her cooking class lasts for about 1 hour. She will take you through each step in the cooking process and you will help her prepare two dishes from scratch. You will learn to make the main dish and appetizer. While you cook together, Geraldine will share the origins of dishes and the culture that surrounds them.

Geraldine is a friendly and warm host. She is genuine, a good communicator and was eager to select a menu that we liked. The market visit was interesting and fun. She showed us various items and explained how she uses them for cooking. She also took us to a store where we could buy spices. We made Kontomire (coco yam leaf) stew, and it was delicious. Geraldine premade Nkate Cake (peanut brittle) as a sweet treat for dessert. This was greatly appreciated. We had a wonderful time with Geraldine and highly recommend this experience.

Wonderful experience!! Geraldine is an amazing cook and such a gracious host. Would definitely recommend, the meal we made for dinner was delicious, we loved learning what it takes to make amazing jollof rice and fish stew and appreciated the hands on experience! Great conversations too - Loved learning about how she found her love for cooking and what her day to day life is like. Side note: loved how she paid special attention to food safety and cleanliness.

I've done cooking classes while traveling in a few different countries, and this was truly a special experience. Geraldine is humble when she teaches, but she is masterful at her craft. She's so kind and welcoming - answering our questions, exchanging life experiences, and more. We learned to make a one-pot jollof rice with fried fish, and a Ghanaian salad. It was so so good. Not a demonstration - we all got to get in there and cook together. Highly highly recommend.

A hands-on cultural experience, shopping at the local market was a plus. And then to see Patience and her daughter cook outside was nice. The jollof rice was delicious!

Geraldine was so very nice to welcome us to her home and introduce us to Ghanaian cooking. We did the jollof rice with beef, and afterward had a nice meal with good flowing conversation and a nice refreshing drink. Thank you again Geraldine!!!!

This will be added to one of my most memorable moments in Ghana. Geraldine is welcoming and super friendly. She made us feel like family from the moment we entered her home. The preparation of the food was practical and very hands on. The jollof with gravy was amazing. My favorite was the egusi and very delicious. I cannot wait to try these recipes at home with my family. I will say getting that when traveling to Ghana you must have patience. There was traffic but Geraldine and our Uber drive helped us find our way.

It was a great experience with Geraldine. We first went to the market with her and were able to pick the menu we wanted to cook. The market visit with a local was a very special experience. At Geraldines home we cooked Peanut Soup with Rice Balls and Palaver Sauce with Yam. Geraldine is an amazing cook and it was so much fun to spend time with her in the kitchen. After cooking we enjoyed an amazing meal and had very insightful discussions about the culture in Ghana. We would definitely recommend you the experience - one of the highlights on our 2.5 weeks trip through Ghana.

We had an amazing experience with Geraldine! She welcomed us into her home with open arms. Ahead of our cooking class, she sent us pictures of all the food options available for the class so we could choose exactly the meal we wanted to cook together. We decided on the peanut soup with rice balls and Geraldine accompanied the dish with fried plantains, peanut balls and tiger nut drink. Everything was so delicious. Geraldine took the time to get to know us and us know her. We loved every minute of it. We definitely recommend this experience while visiting Ghana for any traveler interested in cooking authentic Ghanaian food with a local!

What a truly memorable experience! Geraldine made it so simple — she reached out ahead of time to ask about different foods and created a menu from that. We chopped and peeled and stirred and TALKED, falling into conversation easily like old friends. Plus, YUM. I sent a Ghanaian friend a picture of the Omo Tuo (rice balls) and Nkate Nkwan (peanut butter/groundnut soup) with chicken we made and she was VERY impressed. A must-do while in Accra! Thank you, Geraldine! ❤️
