I recently had the opportunity to take a private tour of El Yunque Rainforest in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The experience was arranged by a close friend as a birthday surprise, thoughtfully planned with my accessibility needs in mind, as I am blind. He wanted to ensure I could safely and fully enjoy the rainforest without attempting a traditional hike on my own. Our guide, Javier, was exceptional. From the moment we met, he shared that he had never previously guided someone who is blind, but he was open, willing, and fully committed to making the experience accessible. His kindness and professionalism immediately put me at ease. Throughout the tour, Javier provided detailed and vivid descriptions that helped bring the rainforest to life. He described everything from the dense vegetation and layered canopy to the way wind impacted some of the trees’ growth. He also highlighted smaller sensory details, such as the texture of bark, the humidity in the air, and the movement of wildlife throughout the environment. He made a point of incorporating sound and touch into the experience as well. I was able to hear the sounds of waterfalls, birds, and flowing water in a much more intentional way through his descriptions. He also guided me safely to feel different plants and natural surfaces, which gave me a better sense of the variety and richness of the environment. These hands-on moments added a meaningful layer to the experience. At several points, Javier encouraged us to “feel the energy” of the rainforest, which became a grounding reminder to take in the environment as a whole. This approach helped me connect with the space in a more immersive and personal way, rather than focusing only on individual details. There were also quiet moments during the tour where I could simply listen and absorb the natural surroundings. Javier was attentive throughout, ensuring I was comfortable and oriented while still allowing space for me to experience the environment at my own pace. By the end of the tour, Javier shared that the experience had inspired him to consider offering more accessible tours in the future. That meant a great deal, as it reflected a genuine openness to inclusion and learning. Experiences like this reinforce how important it is for natural spaces to be made accessible to people of all abilities. Overall, we were very grateful for Javier’s knowledge, patience, and thoughtful approach. He made it possible for me to experience El Yunque in a way that was both safe and deeply memorable. If I return to San Juan, he will absolutely be my first choice for another tour. It was one of the most meaningful birthday gifts I have ever received.

From the moment Javier arrived at our doorstep, it was clear this was going to be something special. He was prompt, warm, and welcoming right from the start — and his enthusiasm for San Juan and Puerto Rico was infectious. Even during the ride to El Yunque, he painted such a vivid picture of the island's history and culture that we felt immersed long before we reached the rainforest. What truly set this tour apart was how thoughtfully Javier adapted to our group. I brought a friend who is blind, and without missing a beat, Javier made it his mission to ensure she had a rich, meaningful experience at every single stop. He worked beautifully alongside the park staff — who were equally wonderful — to give us up-close, hands-on encounters with rainforest snails and insects, describing textures, sounds, and details with such care and creativity. When Javier mentioned the limestone formations and nearby caves, my friend lit up — she had never experienced anything like it. He didn't hesitate. He adapted our tour on the spot to include cave exploration, turning what could have been a standard outing into a deeply personal and memorable adventure. Javier's warmth, knowledge, flexibility, and genuine commitment to every guest's experience is a rare find. Walk San Juan clearly gets it right. They are exceptionally accommodating to individual needs and I cannot recommend them highly enough. When I return to Puerto Rico, Walk San Juan will be my very first call.

Javier did a fabulous job on our tour. While the rainforest was very busy when we visited, Javier took us to places that were very calm so we didn’t feel overwhelmed by people. He knew the ins and outs of parking and where to take us. He was willing to take us to other spots too, although gave great advice about what was safe versus unsafe and what would likely be very crowded. As a guide he had access to some spots that tourists don’t have access to, so it felt like the rainforest was just ours when we were there. He also did great with the kids and the whole family. For reference, our kids are 9, 7, 5 and 2. We brought a soft sided backpack carrier for our youngest, and put life jackets in the car for the little two for swimming. Everyone had a wonderful time! The older kids even got to swing on a rope into the river, which will be a core memory I am sure :)

Verónica was amazing. From easy pick-up and drop off from our resort to her knowledge about Puerto Rico, she made the would trip seamless. We explored the magic of El Yunque and she tailored the trip to what we were looking for! Our family enjoyed finding creatures, exploring the river, seeing the peaks and grabbing a delicious bite. Would highly recommend this tour! It was the perfect length and a great way to explore the beauty of the PR rainforest.

Definitely recommend and would do it again Great guide and flexible experience for your group. We have a special needs teenager and Javier was understanding and supportive. He rolled with what our son could do and pushed him to a new experience. Of course, be ready for any weather (it’s a rain forest). But you’re in great hands with Javier who is supportive and knowledgeable!

We had a great time hiking in El Yunque! Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable and respectful of the environment . Javier shared interesting stories about Puerto Rico's history and culture, which made the hike even more enjoyable. The scenery was beautiful, with lush plants, stunning waterfalls, and singing tree frogs. It was a wonderful way to spend time our last day on the island. We highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting El Yunque!
