Jiankou Great Wall is located in Badaohe village in the northwest of Huairou County in Beijing, about 30 kilometers away from Huairou County Town. It is also situated at Bohai Town (North part at Badaohe, while south part at Bohai). Jiankou Great Wall connects to Mutianyu's East side of the wall, and it's joined the Dazhenyu Great Wall in the West. Since the mountain here is higher and steeper, this section becomes more winding and varied. "Jiankou", is translated as "Arrow Knot" in English as the shape of the mountain is like an arrow, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow knot. This is a private group with a professional trekking guide, and you will have so much fun from this Great Wall hiking tour.
Please miss the weekend when you book it because the Mutianyu Great wall is getting busy and busy at the weekend and holiday.

This tour (hike) was amazing! The guide, Peter, was very kind, professional, spoke English very well, and ensured I was always safe and comfortable. The beginning of the hike is the most strenuous part (trail to get on the wall). Once on the wall, it’s mostly fine. It does go up and down and the Jiankou section is not restored, so it’s a good exercise. There are some tricky parts that require to be in good shape, careful where you step your feet, and not afraid of heights. Make sure you dress accordingly as it can be cold in the morning and quite hot midday. And wear hiking shoes as this is a real hike, with sometimes slippery surfaces (lose gravel) and climbing up/down. There’s also a part where you have to slide in a very tight corridor (so tight it’s hard to turn around): this is when you leave the unrestored Jiankou section and enter the more crowded and restored Mutianyu section (gorgeous as well but many people there — so not as interesting to me than the wild and desert Jiankou section) Peter warned me every time there was a tricky section so it went very smoothly for me. And he follows your pace, so you can either walk fast, slow, or stop regularly to take photos, it’s all good. The Jiankou section is absolutely gorgeous and no one’s there (we just met a group of 3 people at some point, that’s it). It’s wild and, in my opinion, one of the most charming part of the wall around Beijing. If you want to see a wild part of the wall by doing a short hike (3.5-4.5 hours), that’s the one for you. The driver was also really great. Kind, funny, and very considerate. After the hike (around 2pm, depending on how fast you walk) the lunch at the restaurant was really good (and with large portions). You can choose whatever you want, it’s part of the package. Then you can doze off in the car as the driver has to endure (very gracefully) the crazy Beijing traffic to get you back to your hotel room (about 2-2.5 hours if your hotel is in central Beijing). All in all it was a top notch experience to enjoy a gorgeous hike on one of the most beautiful parts of the wall without any of the hassle. I very warmly recommend this tour and have only high praises for Peter and the driver!

Peter is an amazing guide and took care of everything to make this a fabulous and memorable trip. High standard of car picked me up and took me to Great Wall. Peter explained the history of the wall during the journey. The hike was truly breathtaking with hardly anyone else on the un-renovated parts. Peter took the hike at my pace and looked out for my safety at all times. After the hike Peter took me to a very nice local restaurant for a lovely lunch. He was great company and chatted throughout the day. Thank you Peter!

Book it! I booked a solo tour on my last day in Beijing. Not awkward at all - spending the day hiking with Peter is like spending the day with a dear friend. Peter knows the terrain extremely well and adjusts for your pace, level, and tolerance for adventure! I got to see parts of the Wall most people don’t - and venture across less traveled ruins where you won’t see a single other person into the more maintained and busier section. It was hard, scary at times, and one of the best things I’ve ever done. And Peter made sure to take tons of photos of the experience. This was the best way to see the Wall. Thanks for a perfect day!!

We were picked up in a beautiful electric vehicle. Peter the guide was conversant in English and Chinese, talked about the history of the Great Wall and life in China in general. It was a 2hrs ride to the start of the trek. It’s off the usual route so we had to hike through a forested area. First 40mins was tough as we hiked up the side of the steep mountain, fortunately hiking poles were provided. Peter was patient and attentive stopping for short breaks on the ascent. Once we reached the top there’s a makeshift ladder to climb, felt like the mongols invading. Million dollar view at the top and we were the only peeps there. The “wild” side of the Great Wall is simply magnificent, desolate and beautiful. Slowly trek across the wild side to civilization. At one point we had to climb up the side of the wall to join the tourist part of the wall. That’s when it becomes a drag going up and down stairs together with the hundreds of tourist to our end point. Had lunch at a quaint restaurant with tasty dishes, followed by 1.5hrs ride back to hotel. Above average level of fitness required. Highly recommend this tour, probably the highlight of our Beijing trip.
