Worthy of a place on anyone’s bucket list. The volcanic crater of Mt Ruapehu and its milky blue waters are an impressive sight, making this a hike to remember. The lake changes colour from an amazing deep green to pale blue to solid dark grey depending on the craters temperature.

Booked a solo trip up Ruapehu but the weather didn’t look good. Adrift was very clear in their communication to customers- call ahead 3 days out to confirm. Ruapehu was out but maybe the crossing? Talked to Stew the night before after the weather report and he couldn’t advise to do the crossing. Full refund. I appreciate the company taking safety seriously. Weather happens. Good communication from them. Will try again another time.

If you do think you don't need a guide please read the following: Solo alpine hiking is not recommended so I booked my trip with Adrift e few months in advance. This gave me enough the time to prepare myself for a full days hike/climb. Although I'm not foreign to long hikes and tough terrain but on this hike it was all different. Stu and Hiro were the guides for that day and had everything well prepared and organised. Everything went well up till moment I got confronted with an underlying issue that I wasn't aware off despite my fitness level it literally brought me to my knees. Stu made a good judgement and assessment of the situation. In a calm and professional manner the decision was made that I went down with Hiro. Stu kept in contact during this descent till the point he knew I made it safely back to the car. All I can say I can't thank these guys enough. They know what they are doing and will do everything to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. I can highly recommend Adrift
