Tourist trap – €550 wasted due to misleading information

1.00We booked a 3-hour private Northern Lights hunting tour, believing that traveling far away from the city and its light pollution was essential to see the Northern Lights, and that this justified the high price. However, it later became clear that this is a common misunderstanding, and unfortunately one that many tour companies take advantage of. In reality, seeing the Northern Lights depends mainly on clear skies, not on how far you are from the city. When the sky is clear, they can be seen even from within the city — which we personally experienced the very next day from our hotel, without paying a single euro. On the tour day, the weather was fully cloudy, and the chances of seeing anything were extremely low from the start. Instead of being transparent, offering a cancellation, rescheduling, or an alternative experience, the company went ahead with the tour anyway. We were driven only about 10 minutes outside the city, with strong light pollution clearly reflecting across the sky. Even the guide repeatedly said that we would not see anything. After 1.5 hours of wasted time, we asked to return to the hotel. There was no apology, no follow-up, and no compensation. I believe many tourists are misled by this point, and it is important to clarify that distance alone does not guarantee Northern Lights sightings. Lack of honesty and transparency turns this kind of experience into a waste of time and money. I paid €550 for absolutely nothing.
