What To Expect

The feeling of staring skywards at the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, can not be caught on film, brought indoors, nor adequately described. Poets have tried, photographers and filmmakers have tried, but only being there gives you that feeling. As it happens, Iceland is right under the Northern Lights belt, and therefore a perfect place on Earth for Aurora viewing. Also, the unstable weather conditions in Iceland increase the chances of those not having unlimited time to catch them. Clear skies are not needed, all you need is a hole in the clouds, at the right time. This is a hunt, not a conventional tour, meaning we're not going some specific places. Where we go is entirely dependent on the research and expertise of your super jeep guide and the Mountain Taxi team. If we deem conditions unfavourable; we don't go. Our super jeeps are essential for maximising your chances of good Aurora sightings. First and foremost, the darker your surroundings, the better you see Northern Lights. Looking for Northern Lights in a city can be likened to watching a film in a cinema with all the lights on. Our Superjeeps can take you as deep into the darkness as possible within our timeframe, away from the city, and away from buses and road traffic and other light pollution. Off road, on snow, as necessary. If they fail to appear, you will still have had a great trip. If you really want to hunt down those elusive Auroras, Mountain Taxi is your best ally.

5.00On a day when every other tour company cancelled their northern lights tours, due to poor forecast, we decided to try anyway with Mountain Taxi. They use latest official weather and aurora borealis forecast and keep their tour operations more current than other operators it seems. We enjoyed a great ride with a fantastic guide and were rewarded by surprisingly high northern lights activity and clear skies. Highly recommend this tour if you really want to see some northern lights.

5.00After having our Northern Lights tour cancelled by another tour operator and not being able to reschedule with them, Mountain Taxi came to the rescue. We wanted an intimate tour, not one of the cattle heard bus types. Mountain Taxi were very accommodating and provided the intimate service we were after. Their super Jeeps are amazing and so much fun. Our host was very friendly to sharing local knowledge as we chased the Northern Lights. We were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights and they did not disappoint. The owner of the company was also there and he captures it on his SLR and emailed the shots to me at my request the next day. Great experience, great tour operator.
