For travelers looking to explore a more traditional side of Japan, Takayama and Shirakawa-go offer a great opportunity to immerse yourself in a world that seems far away from the hustle and bustle of major cities. Takayama today has within it a faithfully preserved traditional town composed of three major avenues and a number of alleyways. With crystal clear water flowing on both sides of the streets, and historical wooden buildings, you will be witness to the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. Shirakawa-go, on the other hand, is and has always been a quaint village of thatched roof homes, where agriculture and cottage industries thrived for centuries. Nowadays, it has become well known as one of the few remaining villages in Japan that boasts a high number of preserved homes with thatched roofs. You are free to start your tour from either Takayama or Kanazawa, and also end the tour at either of those destinations.

History Came Alive Thanks to an Exceptional Guide

5.00We had a fun day with Harry as he toured us around in both Takayama and Shirakawago. We started at Takayama Jinya, where we got so much more out of visiting the site with Harry's knowledge of the history. He really made the place come alive highlighting so many points of interest. We then walked through Sanmachi Suji where we learned about the area as well as the various street foods and sampled some saki. We made notes of Harry's favorite foods and went back during the free time to enjoy them. We also enjoyed strolling the morning market. We then took a very pleasant bus ride to Shirakawago through the amazing Japanese Alps. The scenery was stunning. Once we arrived at Shirakawago, Harry walked us through the village and toured us through one of the houses, which is still occupied by a family. Even though it was raining during our visit, we were able to enjoy this amazing UNESCO site and from amid the village and then above it for a stunning overview. Again, with Harry as our guide, we were really able to absorb more of the history and specialness of Shirakawago. We were then driven directly to our hotel in Kanazawa, which made our day complete.

5.00Hemi was a very personable and helpful guide. He brought us through the history behind the places we went as well as explained the meaning behind the traditions. Our family enjoyed the tour very much and we will definitely engage them again.

5.00Snow Monkey Resorts was great to work with to arrange this excursion for us. We were a family of 8 with children between the age of 3 and 9 and had seniors amongst us as well. Our guide and driver accommodated our needs and adjusted the itinerary to our needs. The vehicle was comfortable and equipped with a child seat for the youngest child. Enjoyed the narratives provided by our guide and all the additional tips he provided about dining options around Takayama was very helpful too. Would definitely recommend to others wanting. To arrange a private tour of the area.
