What To Expect

Pingjiang Road

With the length of 1,606 meters, Pingjiang Road is a stone route with a river flowing across it. Here, bridges across the river, houses with white walls and black roofs built along the stone road, and the old walking leisurely, which presents the traditional Suzhou local life. Because of its nostalgic style, Pingjiang Road becomes the symbol of Suzhou ancient city. It’s a 1.6km-long (about 1mi) narrow road along the old canal, Pingjiang River, still maintaining its ancient Chinese water town features.Many small alleys intersect Pingjiang Road.Along the alleys are many old residential areas where celebrities used to live. Nowadays they have been changed to bars, teahouses, and cafes, while still maintaining their former appearances.

Suzhou Museum

Suzhou Museum is located at Gusu District, ancient city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It is adjacent to the Humble Administrator’s Garden. The museum was first founded in 1960 on the site of Prince Zhong’s Mansion. The new exhibition building was designed by the world-famous Chinese-American architect named I. M. Pei and opened to visitors in October 2006. This museum has abundant porcelains, relics of the revolution, most notably celadon, handicraft works, calligraphies and paintings of Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) which fully embody the history, art, and culture of Suzhou and Yangtze River Delta.

I’ve done many tours through Viator and this one was unusually disappointing. The tour covered primarily The Humble Administrators Garden and the Suzhou Museum. The value in engaging a local guide for these activities is to help obtain tickets and to navigate through two very busy and popular attractions. In this case, I specifically requested an early start time to avoid the crowds at either attraction. I asked several times and received no response to my request. The Himble Administration Garden is beautiful but by the time we arrived at mid morning it was so crowded we could not enjoy it as we hoped. The next day we went to The Lingering Garden on our own at 7:30 am and had a very pleasant hour with only a handful of people there. The museum was also very crowded so if you have time, I suggest doing that early or late. Also, getting around Suzhou is very easy with Didi- works just like Uber or any ride share. Our guide took us by subway, but we could have easily gotten a ride share, as we did on the way home. Getting tickets to attractions has been easier than I thought. If you’re 69 or over, government run attractions like the gardens are free.

Our excursion in Suzhou was excellent. Judy meet us at the railway station and was a very good guide in the Tongli Water Village and all places in Suzhou. Judy was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Judy spoke English very well. We highly recommend Judy and this excursion.
