The Jinshanling Great Wall is a complicated and well preserved fortification systems and possesses the largest number of watchtowers. These watchtowers were made by huge bricks, 5-8 miles high, and each one built in a different architectural style. The distance between each tower is about 50 to100 miles away. Some of them are half-timbered, some are stone, some with one eave, some with two-eave. The roofs of the towers are many and varied, flat, arched, quadrangular or octagonal. It is an exemplary section of the Great Wall and hence comes the saying that the Jinshanling section is the most essential part of the 10,000-li (6,700 kilometres) Great Wall.

We had a fantastic time on this tour amd would highly recommend. As many other reviews have already stated, it was just unbelievable how quiet the section of the wall was. Peter made the experience fun, friendly and was the perfect tour guide. Transportation was organised, efficient and safe. I would wholeheartedly recommend this experience!

Local guides, Peter and James, picked us up at our hotel in a comfortable minivan and drove us for 90 minutes to the Goubeikou section of the Great Wall. We hiked about 4.5 miles both to, from and along the wall as Peter gave us a thorough history of both China and specifically the Great Wall. His concern for our safety as well as his friendliness and knowledge made the first half of the day quite enjoyable. In addition, Peter was an excellent photographer and helped us capture the beauty and sheer scale of the wall. Next, we drove 20 minutes to the Jinshanling portion of the wall and enjoyed lunch at a local B&B. This was hands down the best food I’ve had in China over our last 10 years of travel in the country. After a great meal with James and Peter, we hiked our way up the mountain to the Jinshanling portion of the wall. The views were amazing, and we were surprised to find that we were the only people hiking the wall. The second hike was even better than the first! We hiked until dusk and enjoyed a comfortable ride back to our hotel. In total we hiked, 6.7 miles.

A fantastic day. Communication was always prompt. Both James and Peter were welcoming and friendly, and made sure we were comfortable. We made a last minute change to leave Beijing a little later in the day and break the walk up into two sections rather than to walk the whole distance in one go. This was to allow us to watch the sun setting at Jinshanling. Absolutley magnificent. Peter was such a knowledgable guide. We had been to the wall previously but without guides, having someone give you the in depth history made it extra special. And as we pretty much had the wall to ourselves (apart from a local farmer herding some goats), you could really imagine what it would have been like to construct and defend the wall. Peter gave us plenty of time to soak up the views and answer any questions we had. Lunch was made from all local produce and was some of the best food we have had from any of our trips to China. Highly recommend this trip. It was a highlight of our trip. It may cost more than other guides / treks, but absoultely worth the money. Thank you James and Peter.

Pete is the best guide I have ever encountered in my travels. Hands down. We enjoyed that this trip included both the restored sections of the wall and the wilder, more broken sections. October weather was also excellent for a long trek. Not too hot, and not too cold. All in all, a memorable trip. I highly recommend it!

It took me a while to decide which operator to use as there were so many offering the same thing. Then I chanced upon the Greatwall Trek Club and they were offering hikes along Gubeikou and Jinshaling with lunch in between. Although they cost more than the other operators, it was well worth it. Not only did they ensure that we were more than adequately comfortable, the guide Peter was excellent, knowledgeable and meticulous. The driver James, is also the owner of the company and has been doing this for 20 over years. He has the experience, the know-how and the connections to the local people on the ground. This meant that we could take alternative routes back to the car without having to walk the same way back. He also knew all the best spots to take excellent photos. In fact, it was James who suggested leaving an hour later so that we could also stay later to catch sunset, which is was a truly magical experience. Lunch was very very good with generous sized portions. As their name suggests, these are guys are foremost trekkers and not just mere guides. They have the best knowledge and this is key to the success ensuring that you have the best time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience We had the most incredible day on this private trekking tour from Gubeikou to Jinshanling, and cannot recommend it highly enough. Our guide Peter was absolutely fantastic – personable, knowledgeable, and with a brilliant sense of humour. From the moment we met him, we felt completely safe and at ease as two Western female travellers. His knowledge of the Great Wall, the surrounding history, and local culture really enriched the experience, and he perfectly judged when to share information and when to simply let us soak in the moment. He also took wonderful photos for us and made sure we experienced the very best viewpoints and quiet, special moments along the wall. Lunch at a local farmer’s restaurant was a real highlight – the food was incredibly tasty, fresh, and beautifully prepared, and it felt authentic, clean, and welcoming. It was exactly the kind of experience we hoped for. Our driver James was also excellent. His driving was very safe, the vehicle was spotless and extremely comfortable, and the transfers were smooth and stress-free throughout the day. Both Peter and James spoke fantastic English and generously offered helpful advice about our wider plans while in Beijing, which we really appreciated. This was a day we will remember for a lifetime, and we are so grateful to both Peter and James for making it such a special, seamless, and memorable experience. Truly outstanding.

We traveled from the U.S.A to China to visit the Great Wall for the first time. I booked this tour for my husband’s 40th Birthday. Our tour experience with Chao (Peter) and James was full of joy and wonder. Peter was very kind, professional, and knowledgeable. In addition, the amount of patience Peter has while operating the tour is truly incredible. Peter also made sure we were safe during difficult parts of the climb. We appreciated him every step of the way. To further mention, James was our driver and he was very nice and professional as well. James got us to our destinations safely. On top of that Peter and James surprised my husband with a birthday cake at one of the watch towers we climbed to on the Great Wall!! The tour company went above and beyond for us without being asked. We would highly recommend a tour with these guys as they made our Great Wall experience unforgettable. We enjoyed every moment and we were grateful for their services. Thank you.

We normally DIY our tours but decided to spoil ourselves with a private guided tour to the wall. It was worth every penny. From booking and communication beforehand to the end , first class. On time pick up and smooth transfer to the start. Our guide, Peter, was so knowledgeable, not just on the history and the information on the Wall but on a vast array of topics - he answered all our questions. Lunch was delicious and the cold beer was well deserved. Peter - thank you for taking such good care of us and those Snickers bars were a welcome snack

It is a demanding hike but it is totally worth it! You will walk for about three hours along the Gubeikou part of the wall that is not restored - but truly authentic, and then you will join the part of Jinshanling which is restored and majestic. There are very few visitors so you have the Wall and the panorama to yourself. Henry has been an exceptional guide! Polite, helpful, professional, welcoming, enthusiastic! I truly enjoyed the tour. The lunch was delicious and the people very welcoming! I strongly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to experience the Great Wall away from the crowds.
