Rio Celeste
Tenorio Volcano National Park Hike Upon arrival at the entrance, you will begin a 2-hour hike of moderate difficulty through the park. Along the trail you will walk through the rainforest and along the Celeste River, where you will observe one of nature's most intriguing phenomena. After this beautiful place, you will continue walking to where two streams merge, turning the clear water into a divine turquoise tone that gives rise to the Celeste River. This chemical reaction, due to volcanic minerals, is an amazing spectacle that can only be experienced in this unique place. After hiking, you will head to another part of the river, outside the park, where you can swim in its blue waters. This is where sloths and other wildlife are often seen. This hike is a fantastic opportunity for healthy exercise and unforgettable experiences in one of Costa Rica's most unique hidden gems.

Wonderful family day at Tenorio Volcano and Waterfall!” Our family had an amazing time visiting Tenorio Volcano National Park and the beautiful waterfall! The hike through the forest was peaceful and full of wildlife — we even spotted some colorful birds and butterflies. The waterfall was absolutely stunning, with its bright turquoise water. It’s a great place for families to enjoy nature, take photos, and experience the beauty of Costa Rica together.

Our guide, Tony, was very accommodating throughout the trip. He took excellent care of our group of nine family members ranging in age from 15 to 73 years old. I was worried that the two seniors in our group would struggle with the hiking portion and Tony was quick to tell me before we even left that there was an alternate waterfall he could take us to that would be easier for them. He also took us to a reserve where we had an excellent guide show us frogs, snakes, and sloths. Although this part was short, we felt like we experienced a rainforest. It did rain while we were there, so be sure to bring rain ponchos. On the way to lunch, our driver asked if everyone liked pineapple and he pulled off to the side of the road and bought some for us. We agreed it was the best and sweetest we’d ever had. After that we had the best meal of our trip so far. Authentic food from the region— choice of fish, beef, chicken, pork chops, or vegetarian option, along with black beans, rice, potatoes, salad, and choice of drink (strawberry-dragon fruit, pineapple, or tamarindo). With full tummies we set off for river tubing. The two seniors sat this one out by choice, but the rest of us really enjoyed the beautiful turquoise water of the Rio Celeste. Each pair of us had a guide who held onto our tube and led us through. We did have the option to be released from them if we felt confident but none of us did. These young men worked hard to keep us safe from the rocks. About half way through it started raining pretty hard but it just added to the fun. We also stopped so the more adventurous people in our group could swing on a rope and drop into the water. Our guides were happy to video and take photos for us. They also had waterproof pouches for anyone who wanted to take their phones. At the end of this, we were served a beautiful display of pineapple and mango and given ice cold bottled water. Definitely take a change of clothes. Some in our group were cold and wet on the long drive back to the hotel. In sum, everyone we encountered was super warm and friendly. Be aware that this is an all day excursion with a lot of driving time, but it’s totally worth it for a private experience for your group.

The tour with Guanacaste Shuttle was fantastic! They provided excellent service from start to finish, with knowledgeable guides who made the experience even more memorable. The transportation was comfortable, and everything was well-organized. Río Celeste itself is breathtaking, and the tour allowed us to explore it in the best way possible. Highly recommend booking with them for an unforgettable adventure!
