Lower Austria is the cradle of Austrian viticulture, so we want to take you to the beautiful forests & vineyards of the Thermal Region, just south of Vienna. Home to traditionally quaint wine villages and some unique local varietals, we showcase the finest in farm-to-table Austrian wine tours. We offer two different tours, depending on the season:
In summer (Apr-Oct), we hike through forested trails and lush green vineyards to appreciate the beautifully expansive views over the Vienna basin from above the canopy. We then continue to one of Austria's oldest wine villages for lunch and a winery visit to sample the very best the region has to offer.
In winter (Nov-Mar), instead of hiking, we focus on the past, present and future of Austrian wine by first visiting one of its oldest wine-making institutions dating back to 1141. We then meet one of the region's finest vintners for a wonderfully intimate wine tasting and Q&A to showcase all that the Thermal Region has to offer.

While the majority of the winter itinerary is indoors, there is a gentle 20 minute walk through flat vineyards as we move between villages, so do dress warmly for that.

Wien Mitte the Mall
The tour meeting point is Vienna's 'Wien Mitte' railway station (09:10 Apr-Oct & 09:40 Nov-Mar). Once we've met and introduced ourselves, we'll board a train southwards (approx 30 minutes) to the heart of the Vienna Woods.
Vienna Woods
Summer We begin our hike in the lovely spa town of Baden, once a favourite country retreat of Beethoven. We meander through the classic village centre and its gorgeous parks before hiking along forest trails towards a magnificent elevated viewpoint which overlooks the Vienna basin & the Wienerwald in all directions. This spot alone is a photographer's dream! We then enter the vineyards, wandering through row upon row of lush green vines. As reward for our efforts, we'll take a break sat among the vines for an open-air wine tasting. Winter Our train brings us directly to the vineyards of the Thermal Region and to one of Austria’s oldest wine making institutions, steeped in middle-age tradition and history. We'll discover how the monastic orders became wine pioneers of their time, develop an understanding of what has shaped the Austrian wine landscape over time, and consider in what direction it may be moving forward...with a welcome glass of sekt in your hand, of course!

If you’re looking for a unique wine tasting experience, this is your tour! A short 30 minute train ride gets you out of the city and enjoying the beautiful landscape of Vienna’s wine country. This private tour guided by James, who was so much fun and incredibly knowledgeable about the area, was just what we were looking for. The walk/hike, albeit quite a distance, boasted gorgeous views of picturesque landscapes with a great finish of delicious lunch and wine tasting in a beautiful little town. If you’re looking to get your steps in and want a once in a lifetime experience, this is your full-day excursion!

A beautiful day hiking and wine tasting in An amazing day hiking through Switzerland's thermal region. The original plan was to kayak through Wachau Valley, but threats of rain made that option unsafe. Thanks to Venture Vienna, they were able to provide an alternative option, and we were not disappointed! Beautiful views, authentic lunch, and great wines! James was an awesome tour guide - funny, knowledgeable, and so flexible!

This tour was amazing! Beautiful scenery and country, amazing wines and a great tour guide. James is so knowledgeable about the region, the wine, and has established great local connections. This was very much a private, small, local wine tour with the families who own the vineyards, that was very different from the more commercially driven tastings we’ve done in the past. He also translated everything from German to English for us. We had a wonderful time. 10/10.

Wonderful experience! Both the hike/scenery plus the amazing food and wine were well above expectations. First part was the hike through Baden and up to an observation tower were each view offered scenes of different landscapes and a few different countries. Climb was invigorating and James kept us motivated and moving forward...briskly at times :-) After the climb to the tower we walked down through the vineyard fields along a well marked path lined with the vintner's stands for sips and bites, tempting distractions for a quite a bit of trail. Last push was to a Church dating back to at least 1140 and the surrounding town where we had an amazing lunch sitting outside with the sun warming us and the food filling us. Good feelings inside and out! The Wine tasting completed the tour with both great wines to share and taste and time with the vintner himself to talk about his wines and the craft. Very generous with both his knowledge and wine pours, our trip ended with wonderful memories of a great experience. James as a guide was also very special. He made sure to engage directly with each of us, learning about us and sharing his own personal experiences. (which are really cool and much better being heard from him directly). James took personal responsibility for making sure we had a wonderful day and we hope to be able to share time with him again on our next visit.

Hi, My husband and I went on a private hiking wine tour with this small company. We found the guide really thoughtful and smart; he gave us many insights into the place and the culture. It was an unusually hot day, so he gave us the option to do part of the hike by bus, which we really appreciated. What we enjoyed even more was our conversation with a local winemaker, where we learned even more about the culture and enjoyed some of his delicious wines. A great day.

My mother and I signed up for a wine tour with James and had the best time! It was off season (November) and it was a bit chilly but that means more room for us. The wine was delicious and James was a great guide along the way talking about the region, the various wines, what to pair them with, etc. We also were able to stop at the Melk Abbey and do a little tour. All around a great day and would suggest to anyone interested in doing tastings in Vienna.

Last October a group of 4 friends spent a wonderful day wine tasting in the Wachau Valley outside Vienna. James drove us through this beautiful region, providing running and interesting commentary. We visited several outstanding wineries and did wine tastings at all of them. We also stopped for a nice lunch in a charming village. James was a great guide—knowledgeable, personable, and completely charming. The day with James was a highlight of our trip through MittelEuropa.
