Welcome to us at Áldu, Sire Márjá and her family who are Sámi reindeer herders living in the Arctic North of Norway, in the peaceful location of Karasjok village in Finnmark. As Sámi reindeer herders we continue with a traditional custom where we tame selected male reindeers for sledding as one means of transportation. Every day at 9am and 9pm we feed the male reindeers located at our homestead and clean their surroundings. Join us for å unique moment when feeding our reindeer located at our homestead in a beautiful winter nature scenery. While feeding the reindeer we will share more information and stories about our way of life as Sámi reindeer herders, our traditions and customs within reindeer husbandry in the Karasjok area in Finnmark (Arctic North of Norway). Which is also one of the last areas in the Nordic countries where reindeer can roam freely and where we still maintain our traditional nomadic lifestyle parts of the year. Your guide and host Sire Márjá is English-speaking and loves to share her knowledge and stories about the way of living, traditions, and customs as Sámi reindeer herders.

This was a wonderful experience! We were a small group (4 people) and we had only one day available for this kind of event, so I didn’t have too many hopes when I wrote an email asking if it’s possible to arrange something for the next day. Sire Marja replied very promptly and was very accommodating with the short notice (including fixing the snowmobile), so we could fulfill our dream 😀 The whole experience took approx 3 hours, starting with 09.30-10 PM at night. (including ride to the farm, putting on the equipment and the stay among the reindeers). I strongly advise to put on the snowmobile clothing (offered by the guests), as it is very cold and your usual winter clothing won’t be sufficient. We drove around, distributing trails of food (grains) for the reindeers. After 15-20 minutes, they started to appear from the woods, reluctantly, and eventually we were surrounded by tens of them. We sat quietly, observing. Unfortunately, but understandably, it’s not possible to pet them, as they are not pets 😀 During the whole time, we asked Sire questions about the Sami culture, reindeer herding etc. I strongly recommend this UNIQUE, direct, personal cultural experience, which is hard to put into words. On the practical size, even though it’s an isolated area, payment is possible by card. I would go again anytime!

Great hosts! Warm and including people taking the time to share and explain their livelihood and their connection to their animals. We even got to experience the reindeers up close. The outdoor food was lovely, and easy to adjust to people with food restrictions. Highly recommend using this family business for smaller groups looking for an authentic outdoor experience and insight into a reindeer herder's life.
