  • Beautiful little hike!

Despite being in quite a big group (~30 people) it was fun, very well guided hike, suitable for everyone who can walk up the slope (~100+ meters). Our guide was leading and had 2 assistants looking after rearguard, we've got a bit of a history and folklore. Beautiful rock formations and vista! Cherry on a cake was the scree ride! (Gaiters and wooden poles provided - bring your own hiking sticks, if you have).

An Amazing half day out with the team at Kaitiaki climbing Mt Tarawera. The guides provide a great cultural experience, teaching you about the history of the Mountains and the Māori people who lived in the area, pre the eruption. The walk itself is fantastic, breathtaking views, spectacular scenery and a whole lot of fun, especially getting down into the crater. All in all, great experience and well worth it, would definitely do it again.

This was one of the highlights of my time in New Zealand. The setting is breathtaking, and the guides were incredible. The physical demands of the hike are reasonable, as the total distance covered is under a couple of miles. But the terrain is not for the faint of heart! There are a few spots where you are on exposed ridges, a few points with loose earth, a small section that required a third point of contact (small scramble, not major, but not nothing), and a scree walk down into the crater. The guides are with you the whole way, though, and they give you a lot of confidence. I sometimes struggle with heights, and there were moments on this one where I had to conquer that fear and keep moving. Those sections aren't long, though, and they are much more manageable than you imagine as you're taking in the terrain at the start. My original tour was cancelled due to winds, but the company made it easy to rebook for the next day. That meant the group was on the larger side, but it still felt like a reasonable number of people. And with four guides, I always felt like I was in good hands. The scree walk from the rim into the crater was really fun! Highly recommend this one for folks who like a little adventure, coupled with stunning views and terrain. It's the type of thing I would do again if I find myself back in the region!

Thank you for a great trip, our family of 10 aged from 8 to 78 years had a wonderful day and the guides were very helpful, realistic in their description, very safety conscious and told us about the history of the area and the stories from the past. The bumpy road added to the experience, such a privilege to be able to visit this area and to see the area being protected for future generations.

Excellent experience right in our back yard, NOT to be missed! How good were Tai and Hux, not just guides, but proud guardians of Tarawera and its powerful history. Kept us informed, fully engaged and safe throughout. They even had the 'sing along' on the way up and back, kapai boys.

  • Really good walking tour

Really good walking tour which takes you up to the top of the crater, around the rim and back. It is a tricky climb, and even harder descent, in places but the guide is very friendly and will help you if you struggle. The terrain is very loose volcanic rock underfoot so good walking shoes are a minimum. Note, it took us about 50 minutes to get to the start of the walk, on a very rickety bus, over some very potholed (off) roads. So the walk itself was only about about 2hrs of the whole trip.
