Plaza Mayor
The name of the plaza has changed over time. It has been known as "Plaza del Arrabal", "Plaza de la Constitución", "Plaza Real", "Plaza de la República" and now "Plaza Mayor". These names reflect events, history and reign in Spanish history. "Plaza del Arrabal" was the original name of the present day "Plaza Mayor". The "Plaza del Arrabal" was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed "Plaza de la Constitución". It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the "Plaza Real". In 1873, the name changed to "Plaza de la República". At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of "Plaza Mayor".

Beatrice was such an amazing, sweet, and funny tour guide! It was great to learn the history about what we were looking at and she did a great job at explaining everything. The tour was very organized, I would highly recommend this. And the royal palace is amazing!!!

With our other tours , small group was under ten people, with this particular tour the "small " group was 20...however our guide was knowledgeable, held our attention and kept the humor coming. We were very pleased with the whole experience ...

Incredibly disappointed in the tour. There were six main problems: 1. The tour guide’s microphone kept getting tangled in his lapels and caused constant feedback - when we asked him to adjust the mic, he didn’t understand what we were saying. 2. The tour guide did not clearly articulate where to look and what we were looking at - as in no info as to where/what in the room he was referencing 3. The tour guide’s native language was not English and while he probably speaks a second language better than I do, he was not equipped to communicate complex words/terms necessary for the tour. 4. Our group was rushed through the tour due to the palace closing early - meaning the tour guide skipped over a lot of things. 5. The info that was presented was essentially what was included on the palaces’ placards - the guide didn’t really provide any additional context or flavor. 6. We had to wait in line to get in…which avoiding the lines was part of the appeal of the tour in the first place… I understand that some of these things are out of the control of the tour company, but many many things are. I would urge the tour management to take the tours from time to time to see what needs to be changed/improved
