We booked our tour with San Blas Tour Yami. The booking process was simple and straightforward. We paid $120 per person, which included hotel pick-up and drop-off, the boat to the islands, lunch, and the Guna Yala community tax. Pickup was at 5:15 AM. The drive to the Guna Yala pier took around 3 hours. This journey is not for everyone. Only 4x4 trucks can reach the area, and tour operators often use the third row for passengers. That seat is very cramped and uncomfortable for such a long trip. The road is narrow, winding, and full of hills. Upon arrival, local authorities checked all our passports (Guna Yala is an autonomous indigenous territory). We then waited about 20 minutes at the pier for the small boat to the first island. After the challenging journey, the islands themselves were beautiful — crystal-clear water, white sand, palm trees, and great weather. We had around 3 hours of free time on the island, which was enough for swimming, snorkeling, photos, and exploring. Next, we went to a shallow “natural swimming pool” area for about 40 minutes, then continued to a third island where we had lunch and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. Despite the difficult travel, the destination fully met our expectations. The return trip by truck to Panama City was just as long and tiring. We’re very glad we visited the Guna Yala community, but we would only recommend this tour to people who are comfortable with long, bumpy rides in cramped conditions.
